About the role
As Environment and Sustainability Manager, you will play a key role in advancing the University’s sustainability agenda, working closely with the Head of Compliance and Sustainability as part of a dedicated team. This position is responsible for shaping and implementing the University’s sustainability strategy and roadmap to net zero carbon, ensuring that these efforts are embedded across all campuses and buildings.
You will ensure that all activities are fully compliant with environmental regulations and will be accountable for maintaining and improving the University’s ISO14001 accreditation, a key benchmark in environmental management.
In addition to operational responsibilities, you will focus on raising the University's profile through its sustainability initiatives, leveraging Higher Education-based league tables and fostering active engagement from students, staff, and the wider community.
As the primary point of contact for sustainability advice and guidance, you will also coordinate green activities across the university, driving collaboration and promoting environmental stewardship.
This is a fixed term role until 31/10/2025.
The anticipated interview date will be 24th or 25th October 2024.
About You
The ideal candidate for this role will have extensive experience in managing change within an organisation, with a strong ability to influence and promote sustainability initiatives through various methods, including sustainability engagement programmes. You will possess a proven track record in maintaining an Environmental Management System (EMS) to the ISO 14001 standard, including the effective management of documentation and compliance.
Key to this role is experience in monitoring and reporting on environmental data, including metrics such as waste, energy usage, and carbon emissions, ensuring transparent and accurate reporting. You will also have experience in working towards an organisation's net zero ambitions, with a solid understanding of carbon emission scopes and experience in calculating carbon footprints to support sustainable goals.
Additionally, you will hold a degree or equivalent qualification in an environmental or sustainability-related field, bringing both academic and practical expertise to the role.

Principal accountabilities
* To work with others to create and implement the University’s sustainability policy, strategy and action plans, including periodic review.
* To work with staff, students and other stakeholders to embed sustainability into all aspects of university life, keeping abreast of sustainability developments and exploiting opportunities.
* Support the development and implementation of the roadmap to net zero carbon, including: working across the university to drive initiatives; working with the Estates team and external bodies to create sustainability funding bids; working with the Estates team to ensure net zero carbon is embedded as business as usual; to work closely with waste contractors and the cleaning services team to implement recycling opportunities and ensure compliance with waste legislation requirements.
* To ensure comprehensive data collection and reporting both internally (Director of Estates, Executive Board) and externally including HESA, People and planet, AUDE etc.
* To ensure that the university maintains its ISO14001 accreditation. To include: maintenance and review of the management system including monitoring and reporting against environmental objectives and ensuring continued legal compliance; conducting regular internal audits and hosting external audits twice yearly.
* Maximise the profile and success of the university’s sustainability agenda both internally and externally by engaging with others including staff, students, visitors, the wider community and external bodies including but not limited to: student engagement – Go Green Week, Hedgehog friendly campus group, DSRL activities, and working to create and run a new student engagement group; supporting the education for Sustainable Development work carried out by the University via the Responsible Futures group; continue to raise the profile of the University through involvement in relevant sustainability awards, community practice groups and league tables (EAUC Green Gown Awards, EAUC scorecard and People and Planet University league).

Qualifications
* A degree or equivalent qualification in an environmental / sustainability related subject; or equivalent professional experience
Experience
* Demonstrable experience of working in an environmental / sustainability role.
* Experience of managing change with the ability to influence and promote using a variety of methods, including sustainability engagement programmes.
* Experience of maintaining an Environmental Management System to the ISO 14001 standard and managing the associated documentation.
* Experience of monitoring and reporting on environmental data such as waste, energy and carbon emissions.
* Experience of dealing with organisations net zero ambitions, understanding of the scopes and experience of calculating the carbon footprint.
Skills, knowledge and abilities
* Excellent organisational, effective communication and presentation skills.
* IT literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Power Point, Word & Excel.
* Comprehensive knowledge of property related statutory and legislative obligations and experience in developing to ensure those obligations are met.
* Specialist auditing expertise in the area of sustainability.
* The ability to influence key stakeholders in order to ensure consistency across the Estates team and wider university.
* Developing and communicating plans and campaigns, including briefing and managing third parties to deliver tactical elements and measuring results.
* Proven ability to establish partnerships, lead collaborative working and cultural / behavioural change.
Business requirements
* Willingness and flexibility to travel and work between University and external sites in a cost effective and timely manner.
