Job Description

Are you a passionate and proactive solicitor looking to make a real difference in local communities? Perhaps you have become jaded with working in private practice and would thrive in an environment where you can enjoy the challenge of providing vital legal support whilst also enjoying generous annual leave entitlements and a truly flexible working environment? West Dunbartonshire Council is excited to welcome a dedicated solicitor to our Commercial and Place Team. In this role, you'll engage in diverse, high-impact work, providing essential legal support across a range of council functions with responsibility for transactions for both the sale and lease of properties as well as supporting the negotiation of contracts.
What You’ll Do:
* Deliver professional legal advice on a wide variety of topics including commercial property, residential conveyancing, contracts, and information governance matters.
* Collaborate with a supportive and energetic team to navigate complex legal issues.
* Tackle meaningful and diverse challenges that drive real change.
What We’re Looking For:
We're seeking a solicitor who excels in managing transactions in a fast-paced environment and who can manage multiple priorities with confidence. You’ll need:
* Admission as a solicitor by the Law Society of Scotland with a current, unrestricted Practicing Certificate.
* A collaborative spirit and a dedication to meeting deadlines.
* A clear Disclosure check for this role, which is politically restricted under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989.
* Previous experience in local authorities isn't essential as we would be happy to support the right person to adjust to working in a new sector.
Requirements
The preferred candidate will be required to complete a Standard Disclosure check prior to a formal offer being made by West Dunbartonshire Council.
The employment for which you are applying is excepted from the provisions of section 4(2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders (Exceptions) Order 1975. Applicants are, therefore, not statutorily entitled to withhold information about convictions which for other purposes are "spent" under the provisions of the Act. In the event of employment any failure to disclose such convictions could result in dismissal or disciplinary action.
Responsibilities
Under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, which introduced restrictions on some posts on the basis of one or more defined criteria, your post has been deemed "politically restricted".
This is an exciting opportunity to work on diverse and challenging projects providing legal expertise to support the Council’s strategic priorities and outcomes.
The successful candidate will benefit from the following:
West Dunbartonshire Council was voted one of the top ten flexible employers and prides itself in providing flexible working to support work-life balance. In addition to this there are also additional benefits:
* Access to the Local Government pension scheme (LGPS) with an employer’s contribution of at least 19.3% and all associated benefits.
* A minimum of 25 days annual leave, increasing a day each year up to 35 days as well as 8 fixed public holidays each year.
* Access to employee wellbeing supports including occupational health & counselling if ever you need help and support.
