Job Details
Following successful promotion within Fife Council’s Corporate Health & Safety team, we now have an exciting opportunity for an FC8 Health & Safety Adviser. The vacancy reinforces our commitment to professional continuous development and growth.
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Health & Safety Adviser to develop and implement Council-wide strategic health and safety initiatives while ensuring employee well-being and compliance with regulatory standards.
In addition to undertaking Health & Safety audits and workplace inspections, the role will establish and implement the Council’s strategic health and safety management systems.
This will include supporting the implementation of the Council’s Health & Safety Management Framework, conducting Stress Risk Assessments, and developing procedures that promote a positive Health & Safety culture across all Council services.
You will provide professional support and advice to maintain the highest standards of occupational health and safety across Fife Council.
This includes ensuring health and safety governance arrangements are in place and regularly monitored. You will be expected to confidently provide advice, guidance, and training to employees and managers at all levels of the Council.
You may also lead on specialist topics, working closely with Health, Safety, and Wellbeing colleagues to share knowledge on areas such as Asbestos and Working at Height.
Key Responsibilities:
* Strategic Planning: Support the development of health and safety strategies that align with Fife Council’s goals and regulatory requirements.
* Policy Development: Formulate and implement health and safety policies and procedures to foster a safe working environment.
* Risk Assessment: Conduct regular risk assessments and audits to identify potential hazards and ensure corrective measures are in place.
* Employee Training: Design and deliver training programs to educate employees on Health and Safety practices and emergency procedures.
* Incident Management: Lead investigations of accidents and incidents, ensuring accurate reporting and implementing preventive measures.
* Compliance: Ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and best practices, staying updated with changes in regulations.
* Employee Support: Provide leadership, coaching, guidance, and support to employees on health and safety matters, promoting a culture of safety and well-being.
* Continuous Improvement: Monitor and review health and safety performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing innovative solutions.
As a progressive employer, we offer a blended working arrangement with home-working opportunities and occasional office-working as required. While most of the role can be carried out remotely, candidates should be able to travel to and attend workplace locations in Fife as needed.
The Person
You must demonstrate strong leadership and coaching skills to support the health and safety team and managers in achieving the Council's commitment to safe working practices. Good communication, IT, and report writing skills are essential. You will effectively manage health & safety-related projects and oversee project teams.
The successful candidate will have experience in engaging, persuading, and influencing a wide range of audiences and stakeholders. You must be experienced in devising, delivering, and implementing pragmatic solutions in compliance with statutory requirements and best practices.
You will have practical knowledge and experience of health and safety risk in one or more industry sectors (e.g., construction, manufacturing, education) or in a related discipline (e.g., occupational hygiene, behavioral safety, ergonomics).
Educated to SCQF level 8, including NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent qualification, with awareness of current UK Health & Safety legislation.
