JOB PURPOSE:
To be a Band 5 Nurse within Dermatology. To provide high quality, effective and individualised nursing care to a diverse patient group with dermatological conditions in a community-based outpatient setting.
ABOUT THE SERVICE:
Sussex Community Dermatology Service (SCDS) and Kent Integrated Dermatology Services (KIDS) is a busy community dermatology service stretching across Sussex, Surrey and Kent. The clinical team consists of Consultant Dermatologists, GPwSIs as well as registered trained Nurses and Health Care Assistants. We also have a dedicated and experienced team of Administrators, Managers and Business Support roles. The service aims to ‘see and treat’ patients during their initial appointment, to avoid the patient having numerous follow-up appointments. The clinical services available to the patients within our service include day surgery, minor operations, patch testing, photodynamic therapy, and phototherapy. We focus on the needs and preferences of our patients, ensuring their wellbeing is at the heart of our decisions.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* To provide high quality nursing care as directed by the lead nurse, consultants and doctors.
* Responsible for ensuring their place of work adheres to all Sussex Community Dermatology clinic policies.
* Have appropriate clinical and professional insight to acknowledge own clinical boundaries, and limitations.
* Responsible for working within the Nursing and Midwifery Council codes of practice.
* Responsible for the safe and appropriate use of clinic equipment and resources.
* To ensure there is an adequate supply of health promotion/information materials available for patients.
* To use own initiative, take responsibility for decision making and prioritise own workload within the team.
* Responsible for communicating with appropriate managers if workloads/pressures become such, that an appropriate level of safe and effective client care cannot be maintained.
* Good working knowledge of physical and psychosocial needs of clients with skin disease.
* Work autonomously in preparing treatment rooms.
* Provide accurate documentation of client care in accordance with the clinic standards.
* Make and receive telephone calls with due courtesy, effectively imparting and recording information.
* Handle complaints and plaudits in a professional manner.
* Effectively and professionally deal with emergency situations.
* Ensure safe practice with regard to moving and handling, SHARPS, infection control etc.
* Contribute to the correct reporting and handling of incidents and accidents.
* To provide high quality, effective and individualised nursing care to a diverse patient group in the Phototherapy Department.
* To ensure that confidentiality and adherence to the Data Protection Act 1998 is maintained.
* Assist with the patient advice line offering expert telephone advice following clinical procedures, i.e. wound care advice post-surgery or laser therapy.
* Participate in teaching, clinical courses and assist with planning of these as required by the management team.
* Contribute to research programmes within the clinic as approved/directed by the clinical team.
* Participate in lifelong learning development for self and others.
* Access and utilise learning materials from a wide variety of sources to inform /update professional practice.
* Demonstrate achievement in practice of competency and standards through professional development and identify ongoing education needs in accordance with the annual review, thereby creating a personal development plan.
* Demonstrate knowledge of safety in care of patients undergoing therapies.
* Be aware of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) and other safety regulations regarding storage, transportation and use of these therapies.
* Responsible for theatre preparation and hygiene techniques.
* To assist the surgeon (acting as “runner”) during clinical procedures.
* To demonstrate knowledge of instruments required for different procedures and selecting these appropriately.
* Accurately label specimen pots – checking with histology request forms and ensuring that the specimen has been obtained.
* Anticipate issues relating to body image post-surgical procedure, fully explaining post-operative care as well as giving written advice.
* To attend staff meetings as requested by the lead nurse, Clinical Director or the SCDS Service Manager.
* Liaising with a wide range of internal staff including Consultants, GP with Special Interest (GPwSI) doctors, IT and administration teams.
* Liaising with patients, external medical personnel including staff at hospitals and GP surgeries.
KEY SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
* First level Registered Nurse with current NMC.
* Comprehensive knowledge of outpatient processes and procedures.
* Experience in wound care.
* Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate in a sensitive, sympathetic manner with tact and understanding of patients’ needs.
* Experience of using email and MS Office.
* Ability to work under pressure.
* Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken including listening skills.
* Flexible and positive attitude towards role.
* Ability to organise and prioritise own workload.
* Ability to work proactively within a team.
* Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Desirable:
* Minimum of three years post registration experience.
* Experience of general nursing.
* Degree or diploma in healthcare.
* Knowledge and understanding of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and national care standards.
* Knowledge of Clinical Governance.
* Experience of current clinical software systems such as SystemOne, Emis Web or Choose and Book.
* Previous experience and interest in dermatology.
* Experience of using electronic patient records.
* Good IT skills.
* Full, clean driving licence and use of own car.
Confidentiality / Data Protection:
Post holders must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection Act of 1998. Post holders must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act 1998 also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information.
Information Governance:
All staff must comply with information governance requirements. These includes statutory responsibilities (such as compliance with the Data Protection Act), following national guidance (such as the NHS Confidentiality Code of Practice) and compliance with Sussex Community Dermatology Service policy and procedures. All staff is responsible for any personal information (belonging to staff or patients) that they access and must ensure it is stored, processed and forwarded in a secure and appropriate manner.
Health and Safety:
All post holders have a responsibility, under the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) and subsequently published regulations, to ensure that the SCDSs health and safety policies and procedures are complied with to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and employees.
The role profile will be kept under review and can be adapted to meet the changing needs of the organisation, subject to appropriate consultation.
