Clinical Volunteer
Description
Clinical volunteers are an essential element of our camps! They participate in daily camper life to provide nursing/medical care. By contributing to a 24/7 provision of residential medical care, they facilitate a medically sound and safe camp experience for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Clinical volunteers will work under the supervision of the Clinical Director and Nursing Coordinators.
NURSE
Registered Children’s, Adult or Learning Disabilities nurse.
* Qualified for 18 months (Children’s nurse) or 2 years (Adult / Learning Disabilities nurse)
* Qualified for 12 months if previous Student Nurse who attended a placement at OTWC
* Registered with NMC
* Holds professional indemnity insurance
* Holds valid, current Adult and Child life support and child protection training.
DOCTOR
ST2 or above in Paediatrics, GP, or Emergency Medicine
* Must have paediatric experience
* Registered with the GMC
* Holds professional indemnity insurance
* Hold valid, current Adult and Child life support and child safeguarding training.
PARAMEDIC
Qualified Paramedic
* Post registration experience: 2 years
* Registered with HCPC
* Holds professional indemnity insurance with College of Paramedics
* Holds valid, current Adult and Child life support and child protection training.
Responsibilities
* Delivery of care to campers following care plans, e.g. bowel and bladder washouts, enteral feeding
* Monitoring and assessing the health and well-being of campers, adjusting and advising on care as appropriate
* Managing unexpected events and exacerbations of the campers’ underlying conditions
* Providing first aid
* Advising, supporting, and communicating with non-clinical volunteers in relation to campers’ care needs
* Attending activities to support campers' participation
* Participating in an overnight on-call rota
* Accompany campers when offsite as necessary
* Attend orientation / virtual training
* Assist the Over The Wall Camp Nursing team with the medical orientation of staff / volunteers
* Documentation and record keeping as outlined in OTWC Policies and Procedures
* Provide feedback and information to parents about the health of their child as needed
* Follow camp standards of confidentiality about camper and volunteer medical records
* Practice within competence, Code of Conduct, and OTWC Policies.
