Job Summary
Wild Planet Trust is a registered education, scientific and conservation charity established in 1957 and based in Devon, UK. We own two zoos in southwest England, plus two local nature reserves and a National Nature Reserve. We support conservation in the United Kingdom and overseas using funds generated by the people who visit the zoos and the expertise and dedication of our staff.
Newquay Zoo first opened its doors as a council run seasonal attraction in the 1950s, relocating it to its current site and now permanent home in 1969. Over 50 years later, our site and work has grown considerably, and we are now one of Cornwall’s most popular tourist attractions and a leading conservation and education centre. There are over 120 species of animal that call Newquay Zoo home.
We have an exciting opportunity for an Engagement Ranger to join our Visitor Engagement team on a fixed term contract until the end of October 2025. This is a part-time role working 24 hours over a 7 day rota, including weekends and bank holidays.
What will this role involve?
You will deliver a daily programme of talks to audiences of varying sizes and pro-actively engage with visitors at enclosures, helping them to appreciate and understand the animals and plants exhibited. You will give presentations and run educational activities as well as short performances in educational shows. You will assist with school groups including meeting groups on arrival and helping with topic talks at enclosures. This role is primarily out on site, interacting with visitors, with very limited time in the office.
What skills and experience are required?
The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate enthusiasm for communicating conservation and biodiversity issues and have experience of engaging face-to-face with children and adults of all ages and levels of interest. They should also have GCSE or equivalent in Science and/or Geography. It would be beneficial if the candidate has experience of working in a conservation or education environment and giving presentations and/or running educational activities. Experience of working with children or at a visitor attraction would also be an advantage.
