This role helps in creating a friendly, welcoming and helpful environment in our Hospice Furniture Centre. The volunteer would assist the Furniture Centre Manager and Assistant Managers in the running of the Furniture Centre to raise funds for the Hospice; including serving and assisting customers, working the till, taking information about collections and deliveries, handling furniture, sorting donations.
Hospice staff and volunteers are expected to reflect our Hospice Values in the way they carry out their roles, and in their interactions with each other and with customers and any other visitors.

What will I be doing/ involved in?
* Greeting and serving customers, providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere and excellent customer service.
* Handling cash/cards and operation of the till.
* Being an ambassador in the Furniture Centre for St Columba’s Hospice by providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere and being able to answer basic questions about our work.
* Taking information about collections and deliveries.
* Sorting donated second-hand goods.
* Handling furniture and homewares, if able.
* Helping to keep the Furniture Centre well stocked, if able.
* Helping to keep the Furniture Centre clean and tidy.
What experience or skills do I need?
* Understanding of the work and values of St Columba’s Hospice. Willing to keep informed and stay updated about our work.
* Friendly with excellent customer service and communication skills.
* Able to use a tablet and willing to take down information about deliveries and collections.
* Numerate (able to operate till and handle cash transactions).
* Enjoy working in a team.
* Physically able to complete tasks such as stocking shelves, sorting donations and housekeeping.
* Able to prioritise when the shop is busy.
* Comfortable working on own during quiet times in the day (when Furniture Centre and/or Assistant Managers in the office in the Furniture Centre) and with other staff and/or volunteers when busy.
* A strong understanding of the need for, and importance of, confidentiality and boundaries at all times.
Time commitment and duration
Generally half a day once a week, but this can also be fortnightly. We try to be very flexible.
Furniture Centre Trading hours:
* Mon-Sat: 10:00-17:00
* Sun: 11:00-17:00
Potential Morning Shift: 10:00-13:00
Potential Afternoon Shift: 13:00-16:00
Should someone in the afternoon be willing to stay until closing (17:00), that would be great too.
The role will be reviewed on a yearly basis.

Additional information
* Hospice Chaplains are always available to support volunteers.
* Volunteers may claim reasonable travelling expenses for transport to and from the Hospice, or the place you volunteer, e.g. one of our retail shops. Please speak to your manager about this.
* The Hospice provides complimentary tea and coffee to all volunteers, staff, patients and families as part of the hospitality strategy.
