Job Specification
Tomson Consulting is a forward-thinking consultancy that works across various sectors, including biodiversity, sustainability, and decarbonisation. As part of our ecology team, you’ll play a key role in delivering critical ecological surveys and reports that support planning applications, as well as biodiversity and sustainability initiatives. You will work alongside our lead ecologist and contribute to projects related to BNG, habitat assessments, and species surveys.
You’ll be responsible for carrying out baseline surveys, including BNG assessments and PEAs, as well as writing detailed ecological reports. You will need to be able to hit the ground running, as this role requires someone with proven experience in report writing and technical survey work. Experience with tools such as QGIS and ArcGIS, as well as knowledge of BNG legislation, is essential.

Key Responsibilities:
* Conduct and manage baseline surveys including BNG, PEA, and species-specific surveys.
* Write and review technical ecological reports to a high standard, including BNG and PEA reports, as well as habitat condition assessments.
* Support the lead ecologist in the delivery of projects and help manage ecological aspects of larger projects.
* Liaise with clients, landowners, developers, and local authorities to ensure the delivery of high-quality ecological services.
* Apply your knowledge of UK habitat/conservation and protected species legislation to practical projects.
Skills & Experience:
* Minimum of 3 years' experience in the ecology sector, including extensive experience in writing technical ecological reports (BNG, PEA, etc.).
* CIEEM membership.
* Strong knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), including statutory metrics and legislation.
* Proven experience in conducting habitat and ecology surveys, and producing clear, accurate reports.
* Proficiency in QGIS and/or ArcGIS.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, work independently, and collaborate as part of a team.
* Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
* A degree in Ecology, Conservation, Land Management, or a related field.
Desirable Skills:
* Protected species licences (e.g. Bat, GCN, Schedule 1 birds).
* Experience with sustainable resource use, renewable energy, or agricultural services.

Location:
We are based in Sheffield, but we welcome applications from ecologists living in or willing to relocate to the north of England. Flexible working arrangements are available, and we have a co-working space in Sheffield for staff who wish to work in-office. After a probationary period, remote working may also be considered.
