Job Summary
We are looking to employ a further cohort of Apprentice Trainee Band 3 Assistant Practitioners in Intensive Care on Pencarrow Neuro ICU. After a successful pilot in 2020, we now have established APs on our unit, and as they continue their development, with 2 qualified RNs and others undertaking their RN training, we are looking to add to the team.
As a Trainee AP, you will join a 24-month programme, whilst based on Pencarrow. You will work alongside experienced ICU nurses to gain the necessary skills, knowledge, and qualification to become a band 4 Assistant Practitioner in ICU. As an apprentice, you will be enrolled at Plymouth Marjon University to achieve your Foundation Degree for Assistant Practitioner. The course consists of taught modules, e-learning, and national competency frameworks which you will work towards on the unit.
This is a great opportunity for highly motivated and caring HCAs with experience in an acute setting who have career aspirations to work within an ICU. Full and part-time applicants are welcome, but please be aware that you will need to work a minimum of 30hrs/week as part of the apprenticeship agreement.

Main Duties of the Job
Under the direct and indirect supervision and guidance of a Registered Nurse:
* Responsible for delivering effective, specialised, high-quality healthcare, ensuring the area of work runs smoothly and efficiently.
* Works under the supervision of a Registered Practitioner.
* Works within the boundaries of existing competence, adhering to local and national protocols/standard operating procedures/policies.
* Delivers high standards of compassionate, dignified care, managing their time, tasks, and resources effectively.
* Undertakes training, assessment, and facilitation of peers and other staff as required.
* To support Registered Practitioners in their duties and contribute to the holistic care of patients as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team.
* To ensure that the environment is clean, safe, tidy, and welcoming for patients and visitors.
* To undertake rotational work within the department as/if required.

Job Responsibilities
Primary Duties & Areas of Responsibility
* Delivering a high standard of safe, compassionate healthcare, recognising and incorporating the specific needs of patients.
* Undertaking assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of care, under indirect supervision of a Registered Practitioner.
* Utilising a problem-solving approach to patient care.
* Promoting and delivering health education within the clinical area for patients and significant others.

* Implementing and sharing good infection prevention and control practices.

* Referring relatives and visitors' enquiries to the appropriate members of the MDT.
* Engaging and interacting with carers/family encouraging them to be actively involved in patients' care planning.
* Providing advice and mentorship to HCSWs, new registered nurses, or any students or visitors to Intensive Care.
* Seeking assistance and reporting problems promptly to ensure patient safety.
* Demonstrating recognition of his/her own limitations in the Intensive Care environment.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
* Achieved Grade 4/C GCSE Maths and English or functional skills L2 in English/Maths.
* Achieved L3 Healthcare related course.
* Willing to undertake Foundation Degree / QCF Level 5 Diploma for Assistant Practitioners.
Knowledge and Skills Essential
* Demonstrable experience in a healthcare setting.
* Proven evidence of recent, ongoing continuing professional development.
* Attention to detail.
* Good time management skills.
* Works within scope of practice.
Aptitude & Abilities Essential
* Effective communication skills, demonstrating fluency, clarity, and ability to engage at all levels.
* Ability to take instructions and work under direct and indirect supervision.
