Job overview
There are 2 posts available. The roles are based at York and Scarborough; based on the interview, the successful candidate will be offered a role at a specific site based on experience.
The successful candidate will join the General Surgery team consisting of 21 consultants working across the Trust sites, who perform a full range of Upper and Lower GI surgery including, but not limited to, laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, TAMIS, TaTMe, complex abdominal wall surgery, pelvic floor surgery, pelvic endometriosis surgery, advanced proctology, advanced colonoscopy, IBD surgery, ano-rectal physiology, laparoscopic bariatric surgery, laparoscopic anti reflux surgery, laparoscopic hernia surgery, complex abdominal wall reconstruction surgery, laparoscopic biliary surgery, minimally invasive pancreatic surgery and Upper GI physiology. Elective day surgery services are provided on both our main sites. Currently, more major surgery is principally carried out in York, with plans to expand activity in Scarborough in the near future. To gain experience in the department, we can offer the opportunity for cross-site work.
In addition, unselected emergency general surgery on-call admissions are cared for on both sites. A separate Vascular surgery on-call rota is provided, based on the York site.
You will also be given the opportunity to train in Lower GI or Upper GI endoscopy subject to discussion/appraisal.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We actively support and mentor Specialty Doctors in GI surgery at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals. We have created an internal training scheme with opportunities in General, Upper GI, Colorectal, and Abdominal Wall surgery on 2 sites. Educational supervisors are allocated to all appointed specialty doctors and help and support is provided for application and passing the FRCS exam. Furthermore, we also support CESR application. We have created 2 CESR associated specialist posts which provide opportunities in consultant level care and independent practice to further support for a CESR application. We are proud to have a number of our Specialty Doctors progress onto Consultant posts.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Holder of a medical qualification registered with the GMC
* Holder of license to practise with the General Medical Council
* Completion of minimum 4-years’ full-time postgraduate training, or equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis, or other equivalent demonstrable experience and competencies
* Completion of minimum 2-years’ in a full-time specialty training programme in General Surgery, or equivalent gained on a part-time basis, or other equivalent demonstrable experience and competencies
* BLS, ALS or ATLS or equivalents
* CCrISP or equivalent
* MRCS or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Surgery in General
* Substantive NHS experience
Clinical practice/ competence
* Ability to demonstrate broad experience and skill in General Surgery
* Knowledge of good medical practice and the General Medical Council requirements
* Commitment to and evidence of continuing professional development
* Demonstrates a sound knowledge of clinical governance practice
* Is able to work effectively in spite of pressures
* Detailed working knowledge of safeguarding agenda, and its relevant legislation, policy, and guidance

DBS Checks
Please be aware that all new employees starting work with us will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role. The cost will be deducted from your salary either in one payment or over a six-month period once you start employment. By applying, you are agreeing to this undertaking.
