ROLE SUMMARY
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
This role uses Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, and Design for Manufacturing skills to develop new product concepts and technology solutions (Techblocks) from idea through to commercially viable solutions for the business. A major part of this role is to lead a team of Engineers, ensuring their professional development and managing prioritisation of workload to meet KPIs and deadlines. It is expected that continued support will be required during the product commercialisation phase of any successful Techblocks.

The role is responsible for generating new ideas and technology that answer the identified business needs, and ensure that solutions are delivered that are fit for inclusion to mass production projects.

ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Lead multiple Techblocks and continuous improvement projects in the mechanical Techblock team, development and proving of new innovative solutions through to solutions ready for inclusion in mass-production end-to-end projects.
2. Lead projects from a technical basis, manage technical meetings, ensure the technical requirement and technical documentation are in place to support new designs and to meet project goals
3. Review the ex-category technology landscape and identify and evaluate technology and tools to enable the development of future platforms
4. Work with both internal and external partners to identify new suppliers, provide input to procurement in supplier selection – including identifying key technical requirements
5. Maintain and develop an IP (Intellectual Property) focus, interfacing with legal and building out patents to create robust patent applications and develop areas that are not covered by IP rights held elsewhere.
6. Providing coaching, mentoring, technical support and guidance for the team and develop the skills and capabilities of the mechanical engineers to enhance and maximise their capability to deliver and support the business and product needs
7. Ensure all internal development processes (. PLM, toxicology, safety are followed and adhered to, and support the wider mechanical team in developing and improving ways or working and new processes, to ensure optimal team efficiency
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE
ESSENTIAL
Experience Required
8. Previous experience relating to the design and development of consumer electronic products and innovative technical solutions
9. An in-depth knowledge of product development and manufacturing techniques and technologies
10. Hands on experience in component design and evaluation for electronic consumer devices
11. Proficient use and in-depth knowledge of one or more mechanical 3D CAD tools (ideally Siemens NX)
12. Experienced in employing development techniques such as FMEA, DFA, DFM, Design to Cost, etc
13. An understanding of simulation tools to assist in rapid development of designs
14. Experience of working with cross functional teams in a global organisation.
15. Experience of regulatory compliance requirements for consumer electronic devices.
16. Proven track record in developing new technology solutions and delivering product innovation
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required
17. Strong managerial/leadership skills, with a proven ability to lead and motivate team members, monitoring performance and ensuring high quality outputs
18. Strong communication and presentation/report writing skills
19. Strong project management skills and able to manage multiple projects/activities and prioritise/balance workload of self and team
20. Able to influence and coordinate cross-functional teams, including internal and key external partnerships, critical in the delivery of programs and initiatives to ensure the most effective use of internal/external resource/expertise
21. Self-motivated to work both independently and within a team environment
Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required
22. Degree-level qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant field of study (eg Mechanical Engineering)
