Kirklees Museums and Galleries are looking for an Assistant Curator in museums to help us shape and deliver our ambitious programme as part of our Arts Council England funded National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) vision.
Working as part of our Curatorial and Technical team, alongside another Assistant Curator, you will focus on community co-curation, collecting, cataloguing, and interpretation of our excellent and wide-ranging museum collections to better reach a broader, more diverse audience. You will contribute to making a difference in people’s lives by supporting the museums team to help people connect with the place they live through collections and inclusive stories.
You will be familiar with current thinking around museum curation and have an understanding of collections management and interpretation. You will help develop a co-curation framework and initiatives and exhibitions that engage with new audiences and underrepresented groups. An initial focus of this post will be the development of cross-cultural interpretation across our three museum sites that explores ways of bringing a range of voices into our museums and improving diverse representation within our permanent collections.
This is an exciting role within a small, enthusiastic, and hard-working team of curators. You will bring valuable knowledge and expertise to the team and be able to share your enthusiasm with audiences. You will be flexible, organised, work well under pressure, and be able to juggle conflicting demands. You will be supported by a skilled and experienced Museums and Galleries team and a co-curation mentor and rewarded with access to fantastic collections and a wonderful opportunity to help develop a ground-breaking programme for Kirklees.
The role is based in Kirklees Museums and Galleries, who are proud to have been awarded Arts Council England (ACE) National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) status for 2023-26, one of eight NPOs in Kirklees, and this role is externally funded from that award. As an NPO, our funding is thanks to taxpayers and it plays a huge part in supporting our work.
