Blackfield are supporting a confidential client on an exclusive basis in the search for a Head of Automation / Automation Programme Manager to have overarching responsibility for a Greenfield project.
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Head of Automation/Programme Lead to drive the automation strategy for a greenfield biotech facility. This role will define and implement a comprehensive digitisation strategy, working with project teams to scope, conceptualise, and deliver DCS and MES solutions.
You will oversee the entire automation landscape, ensuring alignment with business objectives, compliance, and operational excellence. This contract role (Outside IR35) requires a dynamic professional with proven experience in biotech/pharma automation projects.
Key Responsibilities:
* Define the automation and digitisation scope, strategy, and conceptualisation for the facility.
* Lead the design, development, and implementation of DCS (Distributed Control Systems) and MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems).
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, IT, manufacturing, and quality.
* Provide strategic guidance on automation solutions, ensuring scalability and future-proofing.
* Ensure all systems comply with GxP, GMP, and regulatory requirements.
* Act as the key technical liaison between stakeholders, vendors, and project teams.
* Oversee vendor selection, system integration, validation, and commissioning.
* Manage risks, budgets, and timelines for successful project delivery.
* Establish automation standards, workflows, and governance frameworks.
* Drive innovation and continuous improvement in automation and digitisation.
Key Requirements:
* Extensive experience in automation project leadership within biotech, pharmaceutical, or life sciences sectors.
* Strong expertise in DCS & MES implementation.
* Deep understanding of GxP, GMP, 21 CFR Part 11, and industry best practices.
* Proven ability to develop and implement automation strategies.
* Experience in greenfield facility projects,
* Excellent stakeholder management and leadership skills.
* Ability to operate in a contract-based (Outside IR35) environment.
* Strong knowledge of industrial automation, IIoT, and digital transformation.
* Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Automation, or a related field.
