We are looking for a Head of Finance and Operations with proven experience in publishing, as well as strong HR and operational expertise. This role will connect all departments under company rules and policies while building a results-driven culture based on KPI/OKR systems, in collaboration with the Ops team. The Director of Finance will work closely with the CEO to design and lead strategic financial and operational initiatives, ensuring the publication’s sustained growth and stability. The candidate will be responsible for overseeing financial operations, planning, and resource allocation while supporting teams to meet deadlines and produce high-quality journalism.
Availability for off-hours or on-call duties on a rotating basis and international traveling every few months may be required.
This role is full-time contract initially.
Responsibilities:
1. Report directly to CEO and collaborate with senior leadership on strategic initiatives
2. Monitor and direct the implementation of strategic business plans
3. Lead resource deployment strategies and advise senior leadership
4. Build and oversee centers of excellence across departments
5. Develop and oversee annual and quarterly planning and budgeting processes
6. Maintain and analyze financial dashboards for monthly performance tracking
7. Manage cash flow, ensure GAAP compliance, and oversee tax filings
8. Coordinate departmental budgets and headcount planning
9. Conduct budget-to-actual reconciliations and variance analysis
10. Optimize vendor spend and contract negotiations
11. Strengthen balance sheet position for strategic investments
12. Drive operational improvements that enhance employee experience
13. Manage and optimize day-to-day operations across departments
14. Create and maintain accountability culture with emphasis on deadline adherence
15. Oversee logistics from budgeting to development and strategic partnerships
16. Provide interim leadership support during departmental understaffing
17. Focus on cost reduction while supporting revenue growth initiatives
18. Oversee global payroll systems and benefits management
19. Manage cap table and equity grant administration
20. Review and approve spend requests and out-of-budget expenses
21. Ensure proper documentation and maintenance of employee files
22. Oversee contractor agreements and employment documentation
23. Review sales agreements for profitability and financial alignment
24. Track and report on key metrics including: Revenue and OPEX targets, Profit margin goals, Revenue collection efficiency, Revenue forecast accuracy, Cost of sales for direct business, Quarterly team goal achievement
25. Develop and maintain reporting systems for 3, 6, and 12-month forecasting
Requirements:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Economics, Industrial Engineering or Journalism (MBA is a plus).
2. 10+ years of experience running operations or products in a publishing, entertainment industry
