Morgan Stanley Investment Management is one of the largest global asset management organizations of any full-service securities firm, with more than 40 years of history, a presence in 24 countries, and a total of $1.6 trillion in assets under management as of December 31, 2024. MSIM strives to provide outstanding long-term investment performance, service, and a comprehensive suite of investment management solutions to a diverse client base, which includes governments, institutions, corporations, and individuals worldwide.
Founded in 2006, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners (“MSIP”) is a global leader in private infrastructure equity investing, targeting assets that provide essential public goods and services primarily located in OECD countries, with the potential for value creation through active asset management. MSIP has approximately $18 billion of assets under management in sectors such as transportation, digital, energy transition, and utilities. Its investors include some of the largest and most sophisticated pension, sovereign wealth and insurance companies across the globe.
Since its inception, MSIP has steadily increased the global Asset Management team to a total of 10 people worldwide, 4 with a home base in New York. The team now needs to add an Operating Partner in the Americas based in New York.
As Operating Partner, you will be directly responsible for supporting up to approximately four portfolio companies in Funds managed through the NY platform, as well as supporting the Investment team in the due diligence of new opportunities.
What you’ll do in the role
* Work with portfolio company management to identify and deliver value enhancement initiatives, support 100-day planning and value creation plans, and implement business plans, major operational initiatives and, where appropriate, bolt on acquisitions to sustain the long-term operational performance of the businesses in your charge.
* You will work with the responsible Investment Team to oversee the performance of the Americas portfolio companies and be accountable for consistently meeting and outperforming budgets and targets at assigned portfolio companies.
* Ensure material risks are identified and mitigated, that the asset management activities are appropriately resourced, and that the wider MSIP senior teams are briefed on performance, forecasts, and potential issues.
* The Operating Partner must be able to build effective relationships with executive teams, wider management groups, fellow shareholders and directors, and where appropriate other stakeholders and thus influence both inside and outside of the boardroom. They must be able to win management over and justify their presence through credibility, knowledge, and relationship building.
* Act as a Director on the boards of portfolio companies in the Americas portfolio and use that role to help support, challenge, shape and ultimately deliver sustainable asset performance. Lead the creation of value within relevant portfolio companies through advice on strategy, resourcing, operations, financial management, corporate governance, ESG, etc. After which, it will be important to help the platform deliver value maximizing potential exits.
* Manage external advisors (e.g., management consultants, executive search firms, PR agencies, etc.), industry groups, representatives of government and regulatory agencies, environmental groups, competitors, professional societies.
* Contribute to the continuous improvement of the Global Asset Management platform.
What you’ll bring to the role
* You will bring extensive first-hand experience of the U.S. infrastructure market. This experience should be additive to the existing team and is most likely to include time spent in a senior operational role within an infrastructure or industrial corporate, a management consultant role within the space, a board director role at a listed or privately held company, and/or tenure at an infrastructure fund or other direct investing private equity sponsor.
* The ideal candidate will act as a role model within the platform, driving process and problem solving, whilst being able to communicate effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, management teams, and regulators. It is key that this person is seen by management as the “owner” who will support but challenge the CEO, not disempower or take over, enabling the company to deliver on the investment thesis. The Operating partner will be a trustworthy, high integrity individual who communicates easily, openly, and confidently to add value.
* Strong professional and academic qualifications, outstanding commercial, analytical and communications skills, and an open, hands-on approach.
* Your experience of strategic thinking will allow you to drive shareholder value by working with management teams and contributing to significant decisions across complex businesses.
* Flexible and innovative, you will have the credibility, diplomacy and professional polish to work effectively in a highly sophisticated international business and to represent Morgan Stanley at the highest levels internally and externally.
* Significant experience in the broader infrastructure sector, ideally within Capital Intensive industries, Energy, Telecoms, Waste Management, or Transportation with a lens toward value creation, risk reduction, and investment case realization.
* Proven business leader within a well-regarded organization and/or fund.
* Experience building teams, setting metrics / driving accountability, and establishing complementary incentive compensation mechanisms.
* Strong, yet humble and low ego – can persuade / influence based on facts, but comfortable to challenge and be directive when required.
* Action-oriented with ‘sleeves rolled-up’ attitude – self-starter, willing to do small tasks to create momentum but also able to delegate and coach.
