Being the Senior Press Officer
You’ll be making a difference to people’s safety through dealing with emergency communications, providing expert media handling and PR, collating emotive case studies for innovative media campaigns.
You will play a key role in incident and crisis communications, confidently overseeing and advising a team of on-call press officers. You’ll be fulfilled by the variety of your work and embrace the unpredictability of your day – ready to switch from planned PR tasks to emergency incident communications at any moment and heading to the incident ground where necessary.
What you’ll do
* Uphold the reputation of the fire service through effective communications and media handling
* Work with the public and journalists to promote safety and behaviour change messages using a variety of channels
* Manage the day-to-day running of the press office
* Brief senior management and fire officers for interview and write interview briefs
* Play a senior role in handling significant and major incident communications
* Plan, develop, and implement projects, content and campaigns that change behaviours
* Manage a team of on-call press officers and plan the duty rota
* Be an on-call press officer outside of office hours, once every six weeks
What you’ll bring
* Degree level or equivalent in journalism/communications/PR/marketing, or significant experience in a busy communications team/newsroom/PR agency
* Experience in media management, crisis communications and handling of sensitive matters
* Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
* Experience in producing and implementing communications plans and campaigns with proven outcomes
* The ability to stay calm and think clearly in a fast-moving, high-pressured environment, and make informed decisions quickly
* The ability to be flexible, and unphased by rapidly changing situations
* The ability to work without supervision and as part of a team
* Excellent attention to detail
