We are looking for an Associate with 4 – 8 PQE to join our Regulation and Markets team within our Commercial Disputes & Regulation division. The team advises on some of the most interesting, complex and varied regulatory issues in the UK using a combination of energy regulation expertise, public and competition law.
The role will suit a high performing solicitor with experience of regulated utility work and/or competition and public law experience. We are looking for a dynamic lawyer keen to take responsibility and initiative in a client facing role. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
* Excellent communication style and technique (written and verbal).
* The delivery of solutions-focused, high-quality, timely and succinct legal advice, taking the lead on complex matters with appropriate guidance and support from senior colleagues.
The role would suit a candidate attracted to working across a variety of disciplines with a focus on energy regulation, competition law, subsidy control, public and administrative law, procurement and FDI. The varied nature of the practice means you will have the opportunity to gain experience across a range of legal areas, meaning no two days are the same.
The team works at the cutting edge of regulatory developments in the UK, with a particular focus on clean energy and utilities. The work we do in this area is at the heart of the energy transition and helps support our clients in delivering the UK’s net zero and decarbonisation ambitions.
There is significant opportunity in this group to make your mark and develop your legal and client skills in cutting edge cases. The team has an impressive track record of acting in a range of high-profile matters across energy and other sectors in the UK and Ireland. Matters include:
* Advising utility networks on complex price control matters, including an electricity transmission company on its appeal against Ofgem to the Competition and Markets Authority.
* Advising on some of the largest generation and transmission projects in the UK, including high profile offshore wind farms.
* Advising on a range of regulatory investigations by UK regulators.
* Advising on cutting edge energy sector developments including hydrogen and CCUS.
* Advising a company subject to EU Commission investigation for alleged price fixing.
* Acting in defence of a multi-million-pound claim for damages in the Competition Appeal Tribunal.
* Advising on merger control proceedings before the CMA.
* Advising on the application of the UK’s subsidy control regime for both public authorities and private sector grant recipients.
* Advising on investment clearances under the National Security and Investment Act.
Candidate Profile
* 4- 8 PQE.
* Experience working in a similar legal area.
* Strong ability to carry out legal research.
* Exceptional time management skills.
* Exceptional communication skills.
