Job overview
This post is based at the Ealing satellite site Daycare and Outpatients within the Northwest Directorate.
The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation of these programmes with direct supervision. They will have management responsibility for being in charge of the clinic and supervising junior members of staff.
They will be working independently and at times without direct supervision, accountable for their own professional actions. Ensuring the safety and well-being of service users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles.
Main duties of the job
1. Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions, and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge.
2. Carry out ophthalmic nursing procedures and treatments, checking and maintaining the highest possible standards.
3. To take a clear and concise history from patients by assessing their health and well-being and complete documentation ensuring that all entries are accurate and legible and that all information systems are maintained.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Responsible for carrying out clinical ophthalmic practice within designated clinical areas, ensuring that high quality, current evidence-based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions, and evaluations for patients is provided from admission through to discharge.
2. Ensure safe peri-operative care through effective admission and discharge planning.
3. Will be responsible for the application of knowledge across the range of ophthalmic work procedures and practices, underpinned by theoretical knowledge and practical experience.
4. To act as advocate for patients within the area, to ensure a patient-oriented approach to the delivery of care and to meet standards within the NHS Plan and other relevant guidelines.
5. To ensure that patients receive high quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs, and doctrines.
6. Recognise the significance of observations made, and use them to develop and initiate nursing assessments and devise a plan of care.
7. Carry out those activities necessary to conduct a comprehensive assessment of a person’s nursing requirements.
8. Carry out ophthalmic nursing procedures and treatments, checking on and maintaining the highest possible standards.
9. To take a clear and concise history from patients by assessing their health and well-being and complete documentation ensuring that all entries are accurate and legible and that all information systems are maintained.
10. Undertake prescribed physical observations as follows: measuring Intra ocular pressures after competency-based training.
11. To work in Day Care, ensuring the surgical pathway is running smoothly and on the day cancellations are prevented. Keeping the patient experience and safety the key focus of your practice. Working alongside the theatre team to ensure good communication.
