The Role
Main Responsibilities:
1. The Advanced Research Engineer (ARE) role focuses on the technical delivery and leadership of projects and supports the development of project-related activities across MTC, working within various technology departments and industrial sectors.
2. Act as Technical Lead for small and medium-sized projects and programmes, and work-pack lead on large programmes.
3. Independently deliver technical outputs as required, ensuring work meets agreed customer requirements, budget, and timescale.
4. Support the AT Team in delivering products and services. Working within the Automation Transformation team, the ARE is expected to engage with senior technical staff from clients and provide technical leadership during the proposal and delivery of projects, including:
1. Line walks at customer premises
2. Technical project scoping and proposal support
3. Discovery, feasibility, and supplier engagement project leadership and delivery
Interpersonal Skills:
1. A desire to support colleagues and transfer knowledge in Automation and Robotics to others.
2. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, especially with non-technical audiences.
3. Ability to communicate effectively from shop floor to director level.
4. Capable of leading technical conversations with customers during project delivery.
5. Communicate clearly with new and existing colleagues from diverse sectors and backgrounds, both technical and non-technical.
6. Able to support engagement with existing customers to win repeat business.
7. Support the scoping and writing of customer proposals based on requirements.
Person Specification:
Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience:
1. Degree-calibre engineer, ideally working towards professional registration.
2. Knowledge of automation methods and principles, including their respective advantages and limitations.
3. Manufacturing engineering knowledge and experience, including operations.
4. Demonstrable knowledge of practical problem-solving tools and techniques.
5. Basic understanding of project management principles.
6. Background and experience to enable the generation of innovative but feasible concept solutions for process automation and implementation approaches.
7. Strong awareness of the Automation Sector, including UK system integrators and machine design and build suppliers.
8. Evidence of commercial awareness.
