The maintenance assistant will assist the maintenance lead in the day-to-day running of all hospice premises and facilities therein and delegate tasks to the gardening assistant.
Main duties of the job
1. Compliance checks: Respond to faults and work requests in relation to compliance checks across all premises.
2. Maintenance and repairs:
o Travel between sites where required.
o Respond to practical work requests including identifying and purchasing materials, liaising with departments to agree on appropriate timings, ensuring tasks are completed safely.
o Effectively communicate with departments on an ongoing basis to update on progress and manage expectations for completion of tasks.
o Support the planning and implementation of a rolling redecoration programme and major capital projects involving changes to the Hospice buildings.
o Undertake repairs within the post holder's own capability to ensure all properties are maintained to a good standard, including basic plumbing, carpentry, and decorative repairs, and proactively identify areas of work to prevent future faults/deterioration.
o Support housekeeping in routine cleaning schedules such as internal window cleaning and cleaning of high-level areas.
o Respond to emergencies and urgent issues as they arise in a calm and methodical manner.
o Undertake routine checking of the generator.
o Undertake routine checking and basic maintenance of all hospice vehicles.
3. Gardening:
o Follow the all seasons garden maintenance programme as set by the Estates & H&S manager.
o Work with the gardening assistant to ensure all tasks are complete.
o Ensure all external areas of all premises are safe and accessible.
o Work towards the ongoing improvement of the gardens and grounds.
4. Other:
o Perform any other roles and duties as deemed appropriate by the H&S and Facilities manager.
o Be the point of contact for contractors and service engineers when other team members are unavailable.
o Support corporate and regular volunteers, e.g., decorating, pressure washing, garden tidying.
o Assist with ice/snow clearance in winter months.
o Occasional office moves or moving around of furniture and materials.
o Identify and arrange the correct disposal of various waste generated by the Hospice, considering legislation and environmental impact.
o Undertake necessary training.
