Blood Transfusion Senior Biomedical Scientist
Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Biomedical Scientist within the Blood Transfusion department at the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, flexible, forward-thinking, driven individual to help deliver a high-quality, first-class Blood Transfusion service to our users. The successful candidate will be an integral part of a strong supportive management team for haematology and blood transfusion across all of the hospitals within the health board.
The ideal candidate must be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with a relevant Biomedical Science Masters degree or equivalent/experience. You must have UK laboratory experience as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, at band 6 level or above, with a specialist interest in Blood Transfusion, having good theoretical and practical knowledge.
The post-holder will be expected to deliver departmental training within blood transfusion and to support trainees in developing their theoretical knowledge, which will likely be the focus of the role initially.
Main Duties of the Job
You will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the hospitals' blood transfusion departments within the health board. You will be expected to work collaboratively with the blood transfusion service manager and other senior biomedical scientists in both blood transfusion and haematology. You will be an active member of the haematology transfusion team and committee. You will be expected to perform staff appraisals and other HR/workforce duties and you should therefore have good communication and interpersonal skills.
There may be a requirement to perform a limited amount of out-of-hours duties, depending on service requirements. This post will primarily be based at Prince Charles Hospital; however, there is an expectation to travel to, and provide cover at, other Cwm Taf Morgannwg laboratories depending upon service needs. You will be expected to deputise, on occasion, for the blood transfusion service manager. You will be committed to providing a high-quality service to our patients and have a commitment to training and quality. You should have an understanding of transfusion legislation, regulation and the maintenance of compliance with BSQR (2005) and ISO 15189:2022.

To contribute to the provision of health care to the people serviced by the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in the role of Senior BMS. Specifically, this involves day-to-day organisation and supervision of scientific and technical work in the Blood Transfusion section. The post holder will also be required to deputise for the Blood Transfusion Service Manager.
The post holder will work as an independent practitioner within professional codes and procedures and will have significant discretion to make autonomous decisions on validating and authorising results. The post holder will provide a specialist clinical technical service to patients and will be required to analyse a variety of test results, using technical laboratory equipment and explain test outcomes to other health professionals.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* BSc approved and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.
* Further specialist training & knowledge to Master's or equivalent level.
* Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Knowledge of medical laboratory sciences and techniques commensurate with a HCPC registered Senior Biomedical Scientist.
* Clinical NHS laboratory experience, commensurate with a HCPC registered Biomedical scientist in Blood Transfusion.
Experience
* UKAS accreditation; MHRA regulation and Quality Management requirements.
* Ability to travel between sites and well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
