Band 5 - Staff Nurse/ODP - Tower, Nuffield and Lambeth Theatres

We are looking for a Band 5 Staff Nurse/ODP to work in Tower, Nuffield and Lambeth theatres, recovery, admissions/ambulatory/discharge lounges. The post holder is responsible for assessment of the perioperative care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation without direct supervision.
At times they will have management responsibility for being in-charge of the ward and supervising junior members of staff and students. The post holder will be a key member in relation to the development of practice in theatres.
They will be working independently/autonomously and at times without direct supervision, accountable for their own professional actions. Ensuring the safety and well-being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles.
Main duties of the job
* Admit surgical patients
* Scrub/Circulate in operating theatres
* Recovery post-operative patients
* Participate in an internal rotation program to enable multiskilled working.
* Work with multi-disciplinary teams in ambulatory care post-operative lounge
* Co-ordinate theatre lists and departmental duties
* Support Trust initiatives/Quality Improvement and Audit
* Recognise and avoid situations that may be detrimental to the health and well-being of individuals.
* Conduct comprehensive assessments of a person's nursing requirements.
* Ensure all patients have a safe and appropriate discharge plan.
* Carry out nursing procedures and treatments, maintaining the highest possible standards.
* Take a clear and concise history from patients and complete documentation accurately.
* Undertake prescribed physical observations and report exceptions appropriately.
* Responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication including transfusion of blood and blood products.

Job responsibilities
* Work closely with senior staff and multidisciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of practice and staff development.
* Perform the tasks of scrub assistant following all checks and procedures as laid down in National/Theatre Policy.
* Support other members of the multidisciplinary team as a scrub and anaesthetic assistant.
* Act as a mentor for the continuing professional development of staff with the support of senior colleagues.
* Carry out relevant documentation without direct supervision to support safe patient care.
* Be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover as appropriate.
Person Specification
Education/Qualification
* Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner on the NMC/HCPC register.
* Teaching & assessing qualification.
Previous Experience
* Experience of working independently and as part of a team.
* Experience in the relevant area.
* Completion of preceptorship.
* Previous experience in other nursing fields.
* Supervision of junior staff.
Skills/Knowledge/Ability
* Able to assess, plan, implement & evaluate programmes of care.
* Up-to-date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
* Competent in basic life support.
* IT skills and awareness of the structure and organisation of the NHS.
Additional Requirements
* Able to remain calm under pressure.
* Able to undertake reflective thinking on own practice.
