Job Introduction
BBC World Service is expanding its reach to serve audiences in more countries in Europe. The BBC News brand is driven by impartiality, enriched by the world's largest network of correspondents and supported by our commitment to combatting misinformation. We will be offering audiences verified news and expert analysis of key events, shaping the present day in Eastern and Central Europe and the wider region. We will prioritise explanatory and analytical content to help audiences make sense of current developments in Europe and the world, to join the dots in a noisy environment of unverified and uncontextualized news bites. This role will work closely with other journalists to select, editorialise and adapt a curated offer for the regional market.
Main Responsibilities
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Journalist to adapt and produce text and video curated from World Service Languages and wider BBC News content to offer to audiences in additional European languages. Main responsibilities include:
* Adapt BBC News text and video content to be translated and sub-edited by Language Senior Journalists and Journalists.
* Compile hybrid offers from a variety of BBC News sources to feed regional audiences' appetite and needs.
* Write in a compelling, concise and engaging manner, using a variety of formats - from short social media posts to analytical articles up to 1,200 words.
* Produce compelling SEO headlines and summaries, with understanding of the BBC's editorial guidelines.
* Familiarity with language service text and video delivery system, Stitch and Optimo
* Translate or, where necessary produce, concise and compelling short video content - voiced or subtitled.
* Offer ideas that may be developed into original journalism, to be done by BBC News teams on the ground.
* Closely follow diary events in Eastern and Central Europe and wider region and flag them up to Editor, to identify opportunities for curating and publishing content, sourced from BBC News.
* Always maintain professional journalistic standards of accuracy, impartiality and fair dealing, and adhering to the BBC's Editorial guidelines.
* Ensure that BBC Editorial guidelines and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met, referring upwards in cases of difficulty or doubt.
* Proactively identify possible improvements and innovation in working practices and coverage priorities.
Are you the right candidate?
* Fluency in written and spoken English.
* Proven excellent writing and text editing skills, for news, features and analysis content.
* Proven experience of writing impactful text articles and/or video scripts - you will need to provide examples of your work.
* Strong knowledge of the global and European news agenda.
* Awareness of global threats posed by disinformation.
* Production of SEO headlines, for European regional audiences.
* Understanding of Eastern and Central European media market and current challenges to factual journalism in the country and the region.
* Proven experiences of producing impactful short videos an advantage.
* Knowledge of one of Eastern or Central European languages an advantage.
* Video production: scripting and editing an advantage.

Location: Office base is London. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working
Salary: £39,800 - £49,800 per annum, depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience + London Weighting (£5,319). The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
