Job overview
Job Purpose:
* Provide a range of clinical technical support services within the Clinical & Radiation Physics Group, which is part of the Healthcare Science Directorate.
* Manage calibration records for radiation monitoring instrumentation.
* Manage the maintenance and calibration of radiation monitoring equipment.
* Manage statutory records for radioactive sources.
* Assist in the management of radioactive sources.
* Perform radiation monitoring measurements on complex x-ray and associated systems.
* Provide scientific technical services in support of Nuclear Medicine.
* Assist in the provision of occupational and environmental dosimetry service.
* Assist in the provision of radiation protection services.
* Technical support to the Dose Reference Group and Chair in collation and review of data, producing reports and meeting organisation.
* Provide technical services for radiation protection and diagnostic radiology.
* Provide a number of departmental tasks including the organisation and minute taking for local and senior Trust meetings (e.g. Radiation Safety Committee).
Salary is qualification dependent; can appoint as Band 4 as long as approved and appropriate qualifications and experience.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
1. Perform daily technical administration for occupational and environmental monitoring.
2. Issue and receipt of occupational and environmental monitors.
3. Liaise with the Approved Dosimetry Service.
4. Liaise with staff regarding new staff for monitoring, non-returns and resolve any routine queries regarding occupational and environmental monitoring.
5. Organise calibration of radiation monitoring instruments including diagnostic, protection, and contamination monitoring equipment and liaise with providers.
6. Organise and assist in local calibration measurements for radiation monitoring instrumentation.
7. Perform local calibration measurements for radiation monitoring instrumentation.
8. Investigate and perform tests on faulty monitoring equipment and arrange repairs where necessary.
9. Perform regular checks on contamination monitoring equipment between calibrations.
10. Perform Quality Control measurements on a wide range of complex x-ray and associated devices.
11. Analyse test results, produce reports of the findings, present and discuss these with other scientific staff.
12. Maintain records for Clinical Trial activities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
1. Communicate with customers, NHS Trust staff, non-NHS healthcare customers, service providers (UKHSA etc.).
2. Liaise and co-operate with other scientific, medical and other professional staff, participate in work area, Group, Directorate and other meetings as required.
QUALITY AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
1. Follow procedures for record keeping and maintain accurate records of all work carried out.
2. Participate in Directorate and Trust-wide corporate and clinical governance initiatives as appropriate.
3. Be familiar with relevant quality management systems, procedures and work instructions. Propose changes to quality documentation for own work areas.
4. Support the maintenance and development of the accredited quality system.
5. Be familiar with the Trust’s adverse incident reporting procedure.
6. Participate in audit and review of the service.
OTHER
1. Manage and prioritise own workload.
2. Work flexibly to meet service requirements; this will require some tasks to be performed outside the directorate's core working hours.
3. To behave courteously and professionally at all times and seek to ensure that the highest level of service is provided.
4. Work safely at all times and in particular when working with sources of ionising radiations.
5. The working environment may require the post holder to occasionally have exposure to unpleasant working conditions.
6. Support training of other staff.
7. Provide administrative support when needed to departmental and directorate activities including audits under the departmental quality system, use of the Trust asset database (eQuip) and the ordering of goods, and services (EPROC).
Person specification
Knowledge and Experience
* Advanced IT skills; advanced analysis using Microsoft Excel and Access.
* Specialist knowledge and experience in the following areas: Radiation Protection, Diagnostic Radiology Physics, Nuclear Medicine Physics.
* Ability to work without direct supervision under DOP.
* Detailed understanding of the use of unsealed sources in healthcare.
* Detailed knowledge & understanding of testing methodologies for ionising radiation imaging equipment.
* Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (e.g., IRR, IR(ME)R, Health & Safety, COSHH).
Qualifications
* Educated to A-level standard or equivalent.
* Degree equivalent level of knowledge.
* On the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists (VRCT).
* Degree in Physics or related subject.
Aptitude and Abilities
* Good communication skills and ability to communicate effectively.
* Able to prioritise, manage and plan work for self.
* Ability to work under pressure and meet reasonable deadlines.
* Able to carry out accurate practical measurements.
* Frequent requirement to concentrate.
* Occasional requirement to lift and move equipment (moderate physical effort).
* Ability to deal with occasional distressing circumstances.
* Manual dexterity to accurately position test equipment.
* Highly motivated.
* Able to work both autonomously and with others.
