Summary
Freedom Electrical Design Services are seeking an experienced Cabling Design Engineer to join our growing team. This role is ideal for someone who has ambitions of progressing into a senior position in the future. You will be part of our Cable Systems Design Team, based at either our Stowmarket or London offices, contributing to a range of complex and challenging engineering projects that help deliver the UK’s Net Zero targets.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Cable Design Engineer to deliver the design of cable system projects up to and including 400kV, both in the UK and internationally, while ensuring safety, quality, and environmental standards are met.
Responsibilities
* Working both independently and alongside the Senior Design Engineer and other team members to deliver cable design projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.
* Undertaking cable system design, studies, and calculations in line with relevant BSEN/IEC/National Grid/DNO/ENA C55/5 standards and industry best practices.
* Providing input into cable routing feasibility and detailed design studies, considering local planning, traffic management, and client requirements to develop the most cost-effective cable system design.
* Preparing design deliverables for cable systems projects, including:
o Route plans
o Trench configurations
o Cable sizing calculations (manual and software-based)
o Cable bonding arrangements and related diagrams
o Sheath voltage calculations and surge voltage limiter sizing
o Link box specifications
o Joint bay layouts, including earthing design
o Temporary works designs (for excavations)
o Cable system termination designs, accounting for thermal expansion and short-circuit forces
o Specification of cables and associated accessories
o As-built records
* Conducting cable route surveys and contributing to feasibility assessments.
* Seeking innovative solutions to technical challenges.
* Ensuring an active safety culture and maintaining a safe working environment at all times.
* Operating within the quality assurance framework of Freedom/NGB Group, ensuring adherence to project management methodologies.
* Collaborating effectively with other design team members and relevant project stakeholders, including installation, consents, and environmental teams.
* Writing technical reports on routing feasibility, cable sizing, and related subjects.
What We’re Looking For
* HND (or equivalent) in Engineering.
* Strong understanding of cable system design.
* Proven industry experience relevant to the key duties and responsibilities outlined above.
* Good knowledge of CDM 2015 Regulations & ESQCR.
* Full UK Driving Licence.
* Experience in detailed design of cable systems from 11kV up to 400kV.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD is essential.
* Experience with cable system design software such as CRATER & CYMCAP.
* Knowledge of 3D AutoCAD (desirable).
