Alternative Heat is a specialist MEP contractor renowned for its expertise in designing and installing offsite mechanical and electrical prefabricated products. We are expanding our talented team and looking for a Building Services Design Engineer – Data Centres to join us in Banbridge, Belfast, or Dundalk. Hours: 38 hours per week, Mon-Thurs: 8:00am – 5:00pm, Fri: 8:00am – 3:00pm
Salary: Competitive based on experience
Reporting to: Building Services Manager
Key Responsibilities
As a Building Services Design Engineer, you will play a crucial role in delivering high-quality design solutions for modular chilled water pipework systems and turnkey plantroom packages. Your key responsibilities will include:
1. Designing and developing chilled water pipework systems for data centre cooling, incorporating modular skid-based construction for offsite fabrication.
2. Engineering turnkey prefabricated plantroom solutions, including chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, buffer vessels, and MEP infrastructure.
3. Conducting thermal & hydraulic load analysis to ensure optimal system sizing and efficiency.
4. Performing pre-site feasibility assessments and site surveys for seamless integration of modular solutions.
5. Preparing detailed mechanical system designs, including flow, pressure loss, and expansion calculations.
6. Developing mechanical schematics, layout drawings, and fabrication drawings for offsite assembly.
7. Coordinating with electrical and BMS teams for seamless integration of power distribution and automation systems.
8. Ensuring full BIM coordination for clash-free, fully coordinated project execution.
9. Collaborating with structural, architectural, and MEP consultants to optimize space, weight, and access requirements.
10. Selecting high-performance MEP equipment, balancing technical excellence with cost-effectiveness.
11. Preparing technical submittals and liaising with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors for design validation and approval.
12. Overseeing fabrication and commissioning strategies, ensuring compliance with ASHRAE, EN 50600, CIBSE, and Uptime Institute Tier Standards.
13. Staying updated on industry advancements, including modular construction and offsite fabrication techniques.
14. Attending project coordination meetings to provide technical input and design updates.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential Criteria:
1. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent).
2. Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in building services design.
3. Strong knowledge of modular construction methodologies and offsite fabrication.
4. Experience in BIM coordination, working with multidisciplinary teams for a clash-free frozen model.
5. Proficiency in mechanical system calculations, including pump sizing, pressure loss analysis, and redundancy planning.
6. Excellent time management and communication skills for collaborating with various stakeholders.
7. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Teams).
Desired Criteria:
1. Experience with AutoCAD, Navisworks, and Revit for 3D MEP coordination.
2. Familiarity with BIM Level 2 processes and common data environment (CDE) workflows.
3. Knowledge of prefabrication techniques, including modular skids, multi-service racks, and packaged plantroom assembly.
4. Experience using thermal modelling software for data centre cooling assessments.
