We are looking for a Bioscience Technician to support the delivery of high-quality education in our teaching laboratories. The Bioscience Technician will be responsible for supporting and enhancing the teaching and learning environment within the bioscience laboratories. This role involves collaborating with the Laboratory Manager, and overseeing laboratory preparations, assisting in practical sessions, ensuring the maintenance of lab equipment, and supporting students and faculty in their academic and research activities. You will play a key role in maintaining the high standards of safety, organization, and educational excellence within the laboratory setting. Core duties will include: Laboratory Support: Prepare, set up, and maintain equipment, materials, and specimens for practical sessions, demonstrations, and student experiments. Troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment and instruments, ensuring all tools and equipment are fully operational and calibrated. Oversee the organization, storage, and disposal of chemicals and biological materials, ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Organise and manage laboratory supplies, ensuring stock levels are maintained and equipment is in good condition. Teaching Support: Provide technical assistance to academic faculty during practical and theoretical sessions. Assist in the preparation and delivery of practical demonstrations, helping students to understand and apply complex bioscience concepts. Supervise student laboratory work, ensuring proper procedures and safety protocols are followed. Health and Safety: Maintain and enforce strict adherence to laboratory safety standards, including the proper use of PPE, chemical handling, and waste disposal. Perform regular risk assessments and ensure that Health and Safety guidelines are followed in all laboratory activities. Ensure that laboratories are clean, well-organized, and equipped to meet the needs of students and faculty. Training and Development: Support and Train all lab users on laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and equipment usage. Stay up to date with new techniques, equipment, and best practices in bioscience laboratory management. Administrative and Operational Support: Maintain accurate records of laboratory inventories, equipment usage, and chemicals and reagents stock levels. Assist in ordering and sourcing lab supplies and equipment, ensuring cost-effective and timely procurement. Support the management of the laboratory budget and help in cost management. Key Criteria: Bachelor's degree in a relevant bioscience field (e.g., Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, etc.). Experience working in a bioscience laboratory, with a strong understanding of laboratory procedures and safety. Expertise in laboratory equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration. Strong knowledge of Health and Safety protocols in a laboratory environment. Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team. Proven ability to supervise and train others, with experience managing lab-based teams or students. First Aid trained, or willingness to obtain First Aid training and certification. Desirable: A Master's degree in a relevant field. Experience in an academic or teaching laboratory environment. Familiarity with current trends in bioscience research and education. Knowledge of environmental sustainability practices in the laboratory setting.
