If you’re looking for a career-changing role that offers huge variety and hands-on experience, in an organisation known for looking after its employees, then our Construction Development Programme is a brilliant opportunity. This is a paid 18-month reskilling scheme that will train you to be an on-site Project Supervisor.
You’ll receive tailored, world-class training, including qualifications such as NEBOSH, SMSTS, and CQI Quality in Construction.
By the end of the 18 months, you’ll have a valuable insight into National Grid, a portfolio of work you are proud of, and a strong foundation for a long and satisfying career in the construction industry. You’ll be welcomed into a positive, inclusive organisation that aims to become one of the most diverse, equitable and inclusive companies of the 21st century.
About the role
As a Trainee Project Supervisor, you will ensure our external contractors meet our safety, quality, and schedule expectations. Acting as our on-the-ground representative, you’ll be asking questions such as: are contractors building to our standards? Are they doing so safely? If not, can you challenge the Site Manager constructively and work collaboratively to get it right?
The Project Supervisor role is a challenging site-based role. The responsibilities of this role include:
* Effectively monitoring the Contractor’s safety approach and performance on site.
* Undertaking site safety inspections to ensure industry construction standards are upheld.
* Inspect, approve or reject materials and workmanship and be a witness to equipment testing on site.
* Holding coordination meetings with all contractors on site, ensuring that access/egress to the site is controlled and maintaining a site log/diary.
* Review the suitability of Risk Assessments and Method Statements.
* Proactively monitor all activities, promptly advising of any programme risks.
* Monitor the quality of work being undertaken by the Contractor within the region.
* Ensure that a drawing documentation system is established on site, which clearly indexes drawings logged and filed in specific sections.
* Maintain the system throughout with the latest working drawings/revisions clearly noted and drawings filed to ensure they are readily available.
About the Programme
Due to the amount of travel to our site locations, you’ll be issued with a company car (this will be subject to BIK tax, there is no option for a cash alternative). This means you will need to have a valid full UK Driving License prior to application. This will be verified at your assessment centre should you be successful.
Our training programmes are designed to give you the confidence, skill, and technical knowledge needed to become an authorised Project Supervisor within National Grid at the end of the training programme. This is a role for someone who likes to be outside in all weathers and interacting with people as much as possible. You’ll be building your skills from day one; finding out how things work, liaising with stakeholders, and learning from a variety of enthusiastic, dedicated colleagues. You’ll be overseeing construction activities such as cable pulling, battery energy storage systems, toolbox talks, and visits to fascinating sites, ranging from the London Power Tunnels to Snowdonia’s Electric Mountain.
The classroom training is typically based at our training centre in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, so you will be required to spend time away from home for a portion of the scheme and the role itself requires driving to different sites across the region.
The starting date for this role is the 15th April 2025, all applicants must be able to commit to this start date. Applications will close on 04th of November and successful applicants will be contacted to progress to Teams Online Interviews throughout November/December 2024. Following this, a face-to-face Assessment Centre would be held in the Central region on the 22nd January 2025.
