S&D Trade Recruitment is supporting our client based in Croydon in their search for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. This role offers the opportunity to lead design projects, oversee junior staff, and manage a variety of multi-disciplinary projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in both mechanical and public health design, project management, and team leadership within a consultancy environment. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering solutions while maintaining budget and project timelines. The successful candidate will work on a variety of projects, including Education, Residential (New Build & Refurbishment), Commercial Buildings, Decarbonisation Initiatives, Condition & Acquisition Surveys, Contract Administration. Hours 37.5 per week Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5.30 pm with an hour for lunch. Salary £55,000 - £65,000 dependant on experience.
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Key Responsibilities:
1. Oversee and mentor junior staff, ensuring adherence to company procedures and policies.
2. Manage the design team and provide Mechanical Engineering support to all team members.
3. Lead mechanical and public health design and project management across various project types.
4. Develop specifications, drawings, schedules, and cost estimates.
5. Ensure compliance with current Building Regulations, including Renewable Technologies, IES Thermal Modelling, SAPs, SBEM Calculations, EPCs, BREEAM, GLA London Plan, and Passivhaus Standards.
6. Conduct site surveys, feasibility studies, and condition reports across multiple UK locations.
7. Liaise directly with clients, attend meetings, and manage project expectations.
8. Produce detailed specifications, design calculations, and tender documents.
9. Monitor project financials and contribute to fee assessments and bid proposals.
10. Carry out tender analysis and budget costing for mechanical services.
11. Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards, including CIBSE Guides, CDM Regulations, British Standards, and Energy & Sustainability Legislation.
12. Implement and maintain company mechanical standards and best practices.
13. Use AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Hevacomp, IES VE, and Microsoft Project to develop mechanical designs.
14. Conduct quality inspections of projects and ensure high standards are maintained.
15. Carry out on-site project management and condition/dilapidation assessments.
Required Experience & Skills:
1. Required HNC, HND, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
2. Proven experience in mechanical and public health design within a consultancy or contractor design capacity.
3. Strong knowledge of Building Regulations and Energy and Sustainability Legislation.
4. Experience in multi-disciplinary project management.
5. Competence in producing detailed reports, specifications, and tender documentation.
6. Experience in managing design teams and mentoring junior staff.
7. Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Hevacomp, and IES VE.
8. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Project).
9. Membership with a relevant professional body (e.g., CIBSE or IMechE) is desirable.
10. A full UK driving licence is required.
11. Team player, strong communication skillset.
