Job Description:
Job Purpose
The Canal & River Trust is one of the UK’s largest charities, maintaining 2,000 miles of canals, rivers, docks, reservoirs, museums, archives, and historic buildings. Our waterways are vibrant workplaces.
We operate many mechanically and electrically controlled pumps, bridges, and locks, integrating modern technology with historic structures to ensure durability, including hydraulic systems, actuators, and pumps.
As a Mechanical & Electrical Technician, you will use your expertise to maintain and repair M&E structures, plant, and equipment, safeguarding our network's reputation and providing excellent customer service.
Our Gloucester and South West team needs a qualified M&E engineer for maintenance of electrical and mechanical assets, especially hydraulics. You must be capable of isolating power supplies, fault finding within 400v/240v/24v systems, and resolving issues. Since many technicians work alone, appropriate qualifications for legal work are essential.
Ideally, you are familiar with safe mechanical and electrical isolation and can fault find independently. We will provide training for your ongoing development, CTOP, and a supportive environment to adapt to our unique work.
Location & Coverage
This role reports to Gloucester or Worcester and involves regular travel along the regional canal network. Occasional work in other areas of Wales & Southwest may be required. Residing near these areas is essential for regular travel.
Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience
This role supports the Trust’s goals to improve safety and increase waterway usage. Your skills will help maintain our infrastructure.
Key responsibilities:
* Ensure safety in all activities and promote safe working practices.
* Manage volunteers during works to ensure safety, quality, volunteer satisfaction, and adherence to schedules.
* Support maintenance and repair programs, overseeing contractors, and ensuring structures, locks, and plant are well maintained to maximize customer satisfaction.
* Provide mechanical and electrical support for troubleshooting and repairs.
* Under supervision, suggest minor solutions and design modifications.
* Respond promptly to reactive maintenance needs, ensuring network availability and customer safety.
* Inspect and monitor M&E assets, reporting on their condition.
* Operate assets safely and respond to customer inquiries to maximize satisfaction.
* Uphold the Trust’s values and behaviors.
About you
We seek an Electrical Engineer with mechanical knowledge, experienced in fault finding and wiring systems at 400/230/24 volts, ideally from water industry, factories, or manufacturing backgrounds. You should be capable of making decisions to ensure compliance and fault-free operation.
If you have experience with electrical and mechanical assets like water plants, pumps, hydraulics, or similar systems, this role could be suitable. Experience in water treatment, pumps, sewage, hydraulics, production, traffic systems, lifts, escalators, or heating controls is advantageous.
Preferred Qualifications:
* C&G2391/2 or equivalent for electrical testing and inspection
* NVQ3/C&G in Electrical Discipline
* Apprentice-trained multi-skilled maintenance engineer
* Relevant short courses
* At least 3 years’ experience as an Electrical Engineer; mechanical experience is a plus
* Experience with hydraulic systems and fault finding is beneficial
* Experience with electrical control panels is essential
Skills:
* Knowledge of modern maintenance systems
* Good communication skills
* Full driving license
Safety:
* Comply with health & safety policies, report incidents, assess risks, and ensure appropriate PPE and equipment use.

* Be aware of safeguarding responsibilities and support a safe environment for colleagues and visitors.
