National Film and Television School Scotland
Deadline: 14 March 2025 at 12:00
The John Yorke Television Drama Writers’ Academy is a blended 16-week course in writing for television, leading to Writers’ Room experience and production of an original story bible and Pilot script.
The course will guide you through all the principles, focusing on their application in modern, competitive television.
During the first half of the course, you will produce a draft 30-page script for a pilot. This will demonstrate your key strengths and weaknesses and allow us to focus on which skills we need to further develop in the second half.
The second half will focus on creating ideas with the greatest commercial appeal.
Throughout the 16 weeks, we will introduce the key elements of storytelling and screenwriting as well as skills needed to pitch yourself and your work to industry professionals.
1. Basic principles of storytelling
2. Structure theory, history, and practice
3. Concepts of Change: manipulation of change in successful scripts
4. Writing the Hollywood Movie: practical day
5. Character development
6. Dialogue writing
7. Writing week: produce first trial script
8. Story Bibles: what they are and how to write them
9. Multiprotagonism
10. Pitching Ideas: what works today and how to sell it
11. Writers Room: each writer runs a room on their idea for half a day

First session: Monday 7th April in person in Glasgow
