Job Description:
To ensure that journal issues are published according to the set schedule, budget, and to an appropriate quality standard. To liaise with freelancers, vendors, publishers, external editors and authors, and societies to ensure that the publication schedules are met.
Responsibilities:
* Responsible for meeting the schedule (for print and electronic versions) according to the set publication dates, within production-cost budget and the set page budget. Making decisions on reducing pages in an issue, dropping non-key pages, and cutting down checks to ensure timely publication. Drawing up detailed issue-by-issue schedules and provision of electronic files in agreed format for internal and external resources.
* Day-to-day contact with designated vendors, issuing clear instructions including briefing according to company procedures, ensuring that vendors meet deadlines and standards, providing constructive feedback to freelancers, prepress and print vendors, and related problem solving. Alerting Production Manager when solutions to problems are not forthcoming. Processing of all freelance and vendor invoices.
* Ensures that pages are forthcoming when required; service to editors and authors to levels expected by journal community, including turnaround, quality, content including covers, preliminaries, author guidelines, and text; handling of author reprints, colour, and page charge orders in line with current procedures. Constructive liaison with publishers/journal editors on content.
* Provision of regular feedback from daily contact with the market to other team members, both volunteered regularly and provided on request. Provision of appropriate leads to Advertising Agency for advertising, corporate reprint, and other supplementary revenue. Provide well-informed input into marketing plans as a result of regular contact with authors and editors.
* Maintenance of complete and accurate work-in-progress information for own work-planning and for in-house colleagues, management, vendors, editors, and authors, particularly through continuous and timely use and updating of the production document repository and journal tracking system and all other specified information resources – schedule and cost reporting spreadsheets.
