The Rivers School — a 6-12 co-ed independent day school in Weston, MA, just outside Boston — seeks professionals who are looking to join a dynamic, innovative, and welcoming school community.
The Rivers School seeks a half-time clinical school counselor to work in both the Middle and Upper School Divisions. This position spans the school year beginning with opening professional community meetings in late August 2025 and running through the end of the school year in June. This School Counselor will report to the Director of Counseling Services.
Working collaboratively with the Director of Counseling Services, Head of Wellness Programming, Middle and Upper School Deans of Students, School Nurses, Learning Services, DEI, Athletic Trainers, and the respective Division Heads, this School Counselor will be responsible for direct clinical mental health counseling duties in addition to supporting wellness programming in both divisions.
Responsibilities
The school counselor is expected to:
1. Provide counseling to both Middle School and Upper School students, which includes recognizing and responding to student mental health needs and assisting students and families in connecting to resources for therapeutic support and long-term counseling outside of school as needed.
2. Manage an individual caseload of students, which may include conducting crisis assessments and interventions around safety concerns and other urgent mental health matters in collaboration with the Director of Counseling Services.
3. Serve as a member of the Wellness Team, collaborating with faculty members, administrators, families, and the community for student success.
4. Consult with caregivers and teachers/advisors to provide mental health informed guidance.
5. Attend and contribute to appropriate division/faculty meetings, consult as a resource to faculty and administration, and provide psychoeducation as appropriate.
Qualifications/Experience/Skills
1. Master's Level clinical social worker, or an advanced degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology
2. LICSW/LCSW, LMHC, or equivalent state or nationally approved license and/or a Massachusetts DESE School Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker License (Initial Level or higher)
3. Experience providing evidence-based counseling support to adolescents
4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly the desire and aptitude to work collaboratively in a small professional department
5. Commitment to working in, and working to create, a welcoming, inclusive, antiracist community with a desire to continue personal growth in anti-bias education
6. Experience working with Middle and Upper School age students, with a particular interest in the middle school population
7. Experience collaborating with teachers/coaches/caregivers about normative social-emotional challenges in adolescents.
