Under the supervision and guidance of the senior science technician, to provide support within the Science Technology areas. The successful applicant will be given a thorough induction and strong support. You will be encouraged to become involved in the life and work of the Academy and be offered opportunities for personal professional development.
Between £13,987.48 and £22,010.56 per year dependent on age and apprenticeship status.
Training course: Laboratory technician (level 3)
Hours: Monday - Friday 8.05am - 4.00pm. TERM TIME ONLY plus 1-week. Apprenticeship duration is between 18-24 months depending on if a BTEC qualification is being included.

Work
As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.
What you’ll do at work
Some of your daily duties will include:
* Delivering equipment and resources to classrooms as requested and setting up for staff.
* Ensuring that safety clothing/equipment is available, clean, and maintained.
* Preparing, setting up, and clearing away equipment, apparatus, and materials required for demonstrations and class practical work.
* Undertaking presentations on and being a source of advice and guidance on the use and safe operation of equipment, apparatus, materials, and resources to staff and students.
* Regularly inspecting apparatus, equipment, and other resources to ensure that they are in good repair and safe to use, undertaking appropriate checking, maintenance, calibration, cleaning, fault investigation, and rectification, and maintaining appropriate records.
* Ensuring that all materials and chemicals are properly controlled, stored, handled, and disposed of.
* Carrying out and appropriately circulating risk assessments and COSHH assessments, and providing health and safety advice to teachers, students, and trainee staff.
* Maintaining an inventory of materials and resources to ensure timely availability through monitoring and ordering stock as required.
* Providing invigilation and technical support for exams.
* Undertaking other duties to support the range of work undertaken within the department and to support across the curriculum.
* Creating aspiring displays and exhibitions around the Academy to showcase students' work.
* Subject to receiving appropriate training, contributing to the Academy’s First Aid provision.

Laboratory technician (level 3) - Equal to A level
Course contents
* Comply with health and safety policies and procedures including HASWA, COSHH, risk assessments, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), manual handling, emergency procedures.
* Maintain excellent housekeeping, in accordance with organisation Standard Procedures.
* Order and control stocks of laboratory materials where required.
* Identify, organise, and use resources effectively to complete tasks applying the concepts of resource efficiency e.g. energy, water, and waste.
* Adhere to internal and external regulatory requirements e.g. GLP, GMP, GDP.
* Prepare for and perform laboratory experiments, tests, or tasks following specified methodologies to provide reliable, accurate data.
* Demonstrate technical competence in the use of specified instruments and equipment.
* Report faults and seek diagnostic advice to maintain equipment in good working order, including calibration where required.
* Complete documentation proficiently and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results.
* Contribute to the preparation of reports.
* Use simple statistical techniques for data presentation and evaluation.
* Demonstrate problem-solving techniques including identification of sources of error and how they can be reduced.
* Use standard software packages and applications e.g. Microsoft Office suite.
* Use Laboratory Information Management systems to support their work.
* Address non-routine problems with samples and instrumentation, within defined areas.
* Identify relevant information from scientific sources to contribute to solutions.
* Participate in continuous performance improvement of systems and processes relevant to the work environment.
* Evaluate data, recognise and call attention to anomalous or unusual results.
Your training plan
Through the training provider, CSR Scientific Training, you will undertake a Level 3 Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship which will include:
* Fully recognised apprenticeship qualification - Level 3 Laboratory Technician.
* On-the-job competency training.
* Theoretical knowledge - BTEC Level 3 Applied Science (if required).
The majority of your learning will be completed online once a week with some face-to-face practical sessions/exams (if completing BTEC) in Sutton Coldfield.
Upon successful completion, apprentices can apply for professional registration as a Registered Science Technician, RSciTech, with either the Royal Society of Chemistry or Royal Society of Biology.
