An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Oral Health Support Worker to join the Oral Health Improvement team in Mid Argyll, based in Lochgilphead. Duties include delivering the Childsmile programme to improve the oral and general health of children in Argyll & Bute. Childsmile works in partnership with health professionals, parents, nursery and primary school children, and education staff to focus on improving the oral health of children at risk of developing dental decay.
The Programme identifies children from birth and provides a comprehensive pathway of oral health promotion and preventive dental care. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to assist families in accessing all aspects of the programme.
This will include:
1. Reinforcing oral health messages in the home and in the community
2. Promoting positive oral health behaviours
3. Facilitating access to dental services and dental preventive programmes in nurseries and schools
4. Supporting the Childsmile fluoride varnish application programme in Schools
5. Supporting the daily toothbrushing programme in Nurseries, training and monitoring against national standards.
Knowledge, training, and experience required:
1. A good level of basic education (minimum 3 standard grades at level 3 or above) or
2. SVQ in Health Care or related subject
3. Excellent communication and organisational skills
4. Ability to work effectively as part of a team is essential.
5. Experience of working with young children or voluntary work would be an advantage.
6. Commitment to Childsmile training provided by NHS Education Scotland (NES)
You will be expected to complete training in oral health promotion and family health support during the first year of employment.
Car driver/owner is essential with access to own vehicle.
Post is 29.7 hours per week, 41 weeks per year (term time), Monday. This includes working 2 weeks during the summer holiday period.
This post is based in Lochgilphead and includes the Isle of Islay.
