Cardiothoracic Department in UHP Plymouth has gained accreditation to run the Basic EACTAIC Fellowship programme (Approved 2024)
Individual fellowships will be planned according to the level of experience of the candidate. Appointed clinical fellows can expect to gain experience in elective and emergency management of patients with coronary artery and valvular heart disease presenting for on and off pump cardiac surgery, those requiring major aortic and aortovascular surgery and hybrid cath-lab based procedures including TAVI and TEER' mitral valve repair. Basic training in perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography will also be offered and the trainee will be supported and encouraged to accredit with the European Society of Cardiology TOE examination on towards completion of their fellowship year.
Clinical Fellows in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia will also be supported to gain experience of the elective management of patients presenting for thoracic surgical procedures via thoracotomy, video-assisted thoracoscopy and robotically assisted thoracoscopy. There will be opportunities to gain experience managing patients undergoing shared airway procedures including rigid bronchoscopy and LASER for management of benign and malignant disease. Training in performance of regional anaesthetic techniques for the chest wall will also be provided.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates will initially undertake clinical work in the theatre and critical care setting, supervised by the Consultant staff of the department in proportion to their experience and the complexity of the procedures (In a similar manner to rotating speciality trainees). This will also involve gaining skills and experience with TOE, managing cardiac, thoracic and vascular cases in the perioperative period and the safe transfer of patients from the ICU setting back to theatre and for other investigations or procedures in the hospital.
Candidates will be expected to form part of our current resident on call rota, providing out of hours cover within critical care and the opportunity to assist with selected emergency cases out of hours.
Progress will be monitored with support of a dedicated educational supervisor and the EACTAIC directors. It is expected that increasing independence will be gained in management of patients presenting for elective surgery and that on call service provision duties will also be reviewed as the fellowship year progresses.
