We have a role for a do-everything engineer: design, survey, analyse, think, coordinate with architects, follow through site and solve the challenges that come with it. Equally, if you're ready - bid and win work, help run a small company. We offer a flexible role, interesting work, and a decent bonus.
We are currently a small structural consultant, working out of the office in Peckham and from home. We provide a full service for structural design, from initial thoughts through to completion on site. Very specifically, we are both practical site engineers as well as design focused in the office. We work on the design, sat with the architects to produce good, buildable designs.
Where we can, we push a sustainable approach, as sustainability is not an option - it's baked into what we design and present. A lot of our work is with existing buildings, better using what we have. This includes:
1. Considering the materials we already have on site, and what might be reused in a slightly different order.
Our approach is to ask questions, answer questions, give advice, take responsibility, and own our designs. We are full partners to all consultants and to the client throughout the process.
Our work is approximately:
1. 40% residential (individual houses and larger schemes)
2. 30% education
3. 30% commercial
Jobs are generally in the £1 to £4 million range, with job sizes constantly increasing. Some are larger, some are smaller. We work on a fair number of listed buildings. The point is to build the best thing possible, no matter what it is. To do this, we need to work closely and openly with other consultants, clients, and contractors.
Most of our jobs are not straightforward; they require thought and consideration. People come to us for this. We need a person who wants to be part of growing a company and the opportunity to have a role that is as senior as you want. If you have ideas and areas of interest that you want to develop in an engineering company, then that’s fantastic.
We’re looking for someone who can be an integral part of the team – managing and running projects and outsourcing as required, as well as designing. We need someone who is as confident talking to clients and architects as they are with contractors on site. Someone who is pragmatic and practically minded, who can both interrogate an architect’s design and push back on a contractor's whims when needed (or accept them if they are good!).
We’re after someone who has a fundamentally good understanding of structures, as well as existing buildings. Most of our jobs are in London – we do travel for good jobs and have sites in Cornwall, Bath, and the Cotswolds. We work out of a really lovely coworking space with a great community – it’s not a silent small office in a corner somewhere.
The person we are looking for will be able to:
1. Manage their own time and projects – coordinate and design confidently and competently.
2. Work mostly with traditional materials – timber, steel, concrete, but with a wider awareness of materials and techniques.
3. Be confident with existing buildings and various forms of traditional construction.
4. Ideally have experience with listed buildings.
5. Go to site and have an opinion.
6. Coordinate and design with other consultants/architects competently.
7. Write a compelling report that presents facts, analysis, recommendations, and conclusions.
8. Communicate effectively – be happy to pick up the phone and talk through a problem, hand sketch an idea, or markup a drawing set.
9. Have a good idea of below-ground drainage and civil engineering matters – although these would likely be managed by specialists, we often coordinate upfront or on site.
10. Have a general understanding of architectural design and likely desires, as well as acoustics, MEP, etc that we interface with daily.
We need someone that clients, contractors, and architects can have confidence in. You can be pre or post chartered. If you are not chartered, we would support you towards chartership – we have trained many people ahead of the IStructE exam. We would pay for membership of an institution as well as set a budget against training courses.
We are a small practice, working flexibly and can be flexible. Pay will match experience and ability. Holidays/Pensions, etc., are all up for discussion. For the right person – you can tell us what you want and how high we need to jump.
