About The Role
Dyer & Butler are recruiting for a Principal Engineer to work within our Engineering team with an immediate requirement to support our Rail Central team. Our Rail Central team operate in London, Eastern, North West & Central for clients such as Network Rail, TfL, train operators, national housebuilders and National Grid. The portfolio covers civil engineering works as well as HV and LV installations.
The Principal Engineer role will be required to assist during design development, construction, commissioning / hand back and technical support for tenders.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Perform Line Manager duties ensuring that the team is supported and provided with necessary tools and resources to achieve set goals at the organisational and individual level.
2. Coordinate and support technical and engineering aspects of a scheme from tender to completion and hand-back.
3. Collaborate with Dyer & Butler Senior Managers, support teams and delivery teams to ensure that projects are completed in a safe manner whilst client’s requirements and expectations are maintained and exceeded.
4. Proactively review drawings and specifications of allocated projects in the planning stage to ensure safe by design and buildability.
5. Assist with the preparation of tenders to ensure that competitive and innovative options are considered and reviewed.
6. Where required, ensure that the technical requirements of the contract are reviewed and understood at tender stage.
7. Advise tender sponsor of any unusual aspects of the technical requirements and provide information to the risk register including a review of all temporary works necessary and any permanent works design obligations.
8. Ensure commercial success through consideration of various engineering solutions and selection of the safe stand most economically advantageous option.
9. Manage effective implementation of the organisations design management and engineering procedures ensuring adequate checks, reviews and inspections are undertaken.
10. Hold regular reviews and chair meetings as required to ensure interdisciplinary design checks are sufficiently carried out.
11. Mentor other staff supporting career progression in CRE, CEM, TWC and other engineering roles.
12. Monitor, record and report on performance of design supply chain partners.
13. Ensure that Dyer & Butler meets its obligations under HASAW Act 1974 and other relevant statutes.
14. Implement the requirements of the Company Management System (CMS), as applicable to the business operations.
15. Work with various client’s project teams to deliver the required end product.
16. Mentor, manage, guide and assist Design Managers in safe and efficient execution of their duties as defined in Role Profile undertaking checks and reviews as necessary.
17. Provide an engineering update briefing quarterly to the CEMs and CREs within the business so they are aware of any relevant standards and procedure changes.
18. Undertake duties of Design Manager as defined in Role Profile when Design Manager is unavailable.
19. Keep up to date with current legislation, relevant standards and industry trends.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, BEHAVIOUR AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
1. Qualified to a degree level and chartered MICE.
2. Approved Network Rail CEM.
3. Experienced Temporary Works Co-ordinator.
4. SMSTS.
5. Proven experience in the civil engineering sector of management and delivery of design and build schemes.
6. Proven experience in the management, inspection and implementation of temporary works.
7. Trained as Principal Designer Representative.
8. Good understanding of technical aspects of civil engineering.
9. Commitment to the highest practicable standards of health and safety and environmental protection.
10. Ability to assess risks.
11. Working knowledge and understanding of CDM roles and relevant Health & Safety legalisation.
12. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
13. Desire for self-development and continuous self-improvement.
