Job Overview
A locksmith is responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining locking mechanisms, security systems, and related equipment. This role involves working with residential, commercial, governments and automotive clients to enhance security and address lock-related issues. As a locksmith, you may operate independently or as part of a team, often providing on-call services for emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lock Installation and Repair:
o Fit, repair, and replace locks on doors, windows, safes, and other structures.
o Upgrade existing locks to comply with current security standards (e.g., British Standard BS3621).
2. Emergency Lockout Assistance:
o Respond to clients locked out of properties or vehicles.
o Use non-destructive methods wherever possible to regain access.
3. Key Cutting and Duplication:
o Cut and duplicate keys for homes, businesses, and vehicles.
o Create master keys and rekey locks as required.
4. Security System Services:
o Install and maintain advanced security systems, including electronic locks and access control systems.
o Advise clients on suitable security solutions based on their needs.
5. Safe Services:
o Open and repair safes using specialized tools and techniques.
o Provide safe installation and relocation services.
6. Client Interaction:
o Provide excellent customer service and maintain professionalism during client interactions.
o Offer advice on improving security measures.
7. Inventory and Tools Maintenance:
o Maintain and manage locksmith tools, equipment, and inventory.
o Ensure all tools comply with health and safety regulations.
Skills and Qualifications
• Proven experience as a locksmith (or relevant training/qualification).
• Knowledge of mechanical and electronic locking systems.
• Skilled in using locksmith tools and techniques.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently and handle emergencies.
• A valid driving licence (for mobile locksmith services).
• Will require security pass for government and police sites (will be provided by company)
Desirable:
• NVQ/SVQ in locksmithing or a related field.
• Membership in professional bodies such as the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA).
Working Conditions
• Flexible hours, often including evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts.
• Work may involve travel to different locations and handling emergencies.
• Physical demands such as bending, lifting, and working in confined spaces.
• Other duties as required assisting fabrication, installation teams at times.
