We are a family run business in the heart of Derbyshire working with many different types of stone and specialising in bespoke commissions. Our skilled work takes us to many historic houses and churches. We also specialise in pointing and working with lime mortars, either burning lime ourselves to make hot mixes or using various hydraulic limes to make different mortars, depending on the application. You will join a small dedicated team on projects based mainly in Derbyshire, yet can sometimes lead all over the country, learning the craft of banker, heritage and fixer mason and lime pointing. Your work will contribute to the management of England’s unique historic environment, helping to ensure that it can be used, understood and enjoyed by a diverse range of people for generations to come.
Job Title: Apprentice Stonemason Level 2

Attendance: At least 40 Hours Week, Monday – Friday, between 7:30 – 17:00
Overall Purpose of Apprenticeship:
Starting with a 12 month probation period we will welcome you into the business, allowing time for you to understand the role of an apprentice stonemason and show determination and understanding of your role. Once the probation period has ended, you will have the opportunity to complete a NOCN_Cskills Awards Level 2 Award in Banker Masonry or Heritage Masonry. You will undergo your apprenticeship with help from a multi-skilled team which is headed by Mark Eaton. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn heritage skills along with opportunities for training and career progression within the business.
Main Areas of Work:
1. To carry out work to contribute to the conservation, restoration, or creation of works and more, following specification given by management and project leaders.
2. Gaining skills in banker, heritage and fixer masonry for various projects.
3. To gain experience in the craft of stonemasonry repairs, creation and other required knowledge of the trade of works.
4. To be accountable for their own development by undertaking and completing records in accordance with the apprenticeship programme.
5. To be accountable for the health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.
6. To champion and promote heritage craft skills for the business.
7. Committing to development of skills through participating in training and development activities.
8. Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and statutory codes of practice as advised.
Responsibilities:
1. Construct and repair stone structures.
2. Interpret blueprints and technical drawings to determine project specifications.
3. Utilise hand tools and power tools effectively to shape and finish stone materials.
4. Perform lime pointing tasks as needed.
5. Collaborate with other tradespeople to complete projects efficiently.
6. Maintain a clean and safe work environment by following health and safety regulations.
7. Conduct regular inspections of completed work to ensure quality standards are met.
8. Create new masonry for varying projects.
The candidate may be required to perform other duties or tasks as may be reasonably requested by R M Eaton Stonemasonry and will be expected to travel to college for the apprenticeship programme.
Person Specification:
The Job Description and Person Specification attached outlines the main areas of work incorporated in the Placement. Knowledge:
1. Knowledge or interest in traditional building skills in particular stonemasonry.
2. An NVQ level 2 qualification or equivalent in a related building skill.
Skills:
1. Evidence of having worked with hand tools, ideally in this building skill area, such as chisels, trowels, and hammers, as well as power tools like saws and drills.
2. Dedication, understands the importance of punctuality and reliability.
3. Proven ability to work outside and at heights, in a variety of weather conditions.
4. Good communication skills.
5. Adaptable and flexible, with proven qualities as a strong team player, able to work closely with others, and ability to work on one’s own initiative.
6. This role requires travel to various locations, therefore a Drivers Licence and own transport is advantageous for this role.
7. Strong attention to detail with excellent problem-solving skills.
8. Physical stamina and strength to perform manual tasks for extended periods.
9. Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints accurately.
10. Experience in stonemasonry or a similar industry.
11. Knowledge of lime pointing techniques is advantageous but not essential.
