The Position
Develop and introduce special purpose machinery and equipment for the unique processes involved in seal manufacture. This requires a practical, hands-on individual who can design equipment and then take this through concept, manufacture, commissioning and into production.
Predominantly involved in the highly skilled, complex and specialist detailed work of CAD design for equipment, tooling, jigs and fixtures. This requires the application of a broad range of activities including the interpretation of engineering drawings and technical instructions.
Research and potentially introduce cutting edge technologies into manufacturing processes e.g. 3D laser measurement, 3D printing, infra-red and laser technologies, cobots etc.
You will be responsible for the quality and accuracy for the work undertaken and be proactive in finding solutions to problems and identifying ways to improve the business and to ensure that relevant product testing, technical and quality approvals are gained as required in relation to any process modification.
Key responsibilities
* Provide technical support and production engineering solutions to manufacturing, for projects which may be generated because of process improvement, efficiency improvement, health and safety issue, product quality issue or new product development.
* Create the necessary designs, specifications, technical sketches and detailed drawings to enable subcontractors or in-house engineers to manufacture the required equipment. Work to relevant company procedures including ISO 9001: 2008. Use AutoCad and AutoDesk 3D Inventor to model and detail designs as required. Conduct any necessary calculations to verify the process design and use AutoDesk 3D Inventor tools as required i.e. – assembly simulation.
* Actively involve operators and back office to ensure buy-in in coming up with the best solution to a problem.
* Actively participate in engineering team meetings, production team meetings and production development team meetings as required by the project and to give feedback on progress of any actions.
* Ensure that the necessary technical approval and product testing is obtained where required prior to releasing a new process to production. To complete necessary calculations where required to justify progressing with the project.
* Give and where necessary, seek advice on manufacture capability.
* Prepare health and safety risk assessments (PUWER regs 1998), standard operating procedures and training documents in order to ensure new process introduction is done in line with company procedures, and conduct any necessary training as required by the new or modified process introduction .
* Raise Capital Authorisation and purchase requisitions for new equipment in line with company procedures.
* Ensure new production processes that comply with both company policy and accepted legislation.
* Communicate effectively with suppliers, subcontractors and JW staff during any new process development to include organisation of trials and tests to ensure the new process meets the initial specification.
* Ensure competitive pricing is obtained for new jigs, fixtures, tooling and fabrication work by obtaining several subcontractor quotations where applicable. To liaise with the JW purchasing department during the process.
* Assist with the creation of photographs and narratives for process improvements to be placed on the JW intranet site, production development monthly report to be presented at the JW exec and board meetings.
Experience/Qualifications:
* Educated to degree level in Product Design / Industrial Design / Mechanical Engineering (or similar).
* Relevant experience in an engineering position within a production environment.
* 3D CAD experience (ideally Autodesk Inventor).
* Proven background / experience supporting the introduction of new products and or special purpose machinery from design / concept phases through to testing and manufacturing.
* Experience with a variety of materials and manufacturing processes (3D printing, CNC, fabrication, die casting, assembly etc.).
* Experience of designing jigs and fixtures to project brief.
