Location: Guildford or London/hybrid - 2 days per week in office Salary: Dep on exp car allowance bonus benefits Role purpose The purpose of this role is to set the direction of portfolio steering capabilities across multiple lines of business and products, whilst maintaining support for the overall Technical ambition and strategy. The Head of Portfolio Management/Steering is responsible for the delivery of effective and predictive steering and monitoring which enables every stakeholder to make consistent and transparent decisions. It runs key performance dialogues with Group and manages the implementation of key global portfolio and performance management initiatives. It has significant influence with the underwriting, actuarial, pricing, claims and data teams at all levels, informing stakeholders of emerging trends based on analysis of internal and external data and providing proactive recommendations for strategic change within the portfolios - focusing on sustainable profit drivers and intelligent growth opportunities. Key responsibilities: Monitors the performance lines of business and products within the business unit, identifying under and over performance, implementing remedial and opportunity actions as appropriate. Liaises with multiple Group centers (Global Commercial, Global P&C and GAPC) running key performance dialogues and implementing key global portfolio and performance management initiatives Drives the technical development across all lines of business through ownership of enhancing the latest portfolio management techniques targeting new exposure areas, and implementing segment level trading tactics Exploits technical pricing as part of the Underwriting approach for all lines leveraging pricing tools to identify and pursue profitable segments within the portfolio using forward looking metrics, adopting a test and learn approach Harnesses new data and tooling to provide product agnostic analysis such as accumulation monitoring, whilst championing data governance, management and quality Leads the definition and subsequent continuous improvement of Underwriting MI and Analysis requirements and processes. Observes and investigates developing trends within underwriting and claims data to support Claims, Pricing and Underwriting decisions. Offers guidance to stakeholders on data interpretation to help effective decision-making, including current and predicted inflation reporting to support pricing and underwriting decisions. Implements technical training activity across both central and regional functions, identifying the training needs of the staff and owning the technical content delivered Contributes to strategic and tactical business developments and projects by providing thought leadership and undertaking analysis as required to help deliver business objectives. Technical skills: Able to identify trends and implement required changes into underwriting strategy, pricing or claims initiatives and apply risk management techniques to ensure the portfolio(s) are not over exposed in any one area Understanding of Underwriting skills required to actively contribute to segmentation and product development activities. Ability to interpret statistical data, including identification of trends, influences and anomalies on a case-by-case and local account basis. Understanding of Treaty and facultative re-insurance programmes and how facultative reinsurance can be used to widen risk acceptance or control exposure. Exceptional PC skills including knowledge of MS Office, SQL, Oracle, SAS and other MI tools. Able to demonstrate a high level of numerical, analytical and logic skills. Ability to interpret vast quantities of complex data, including external data sources and apply them to internal data sets. High level of knowledge in relation to data set strategies, market dynamics and legislative influences. Persuasive verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to proactively influence others. Ability to manage and influence stakeholders effectively. Skills & experience: Has an understanding of Project Management within the Company Extensive proven experience of working within a general insurer environment with influence or responsibility for top and bottom line performance of a portfolio. Demonstrates advanced leadership skills. Proven ability to understand key underwriting concepts and principles. Strong experience in presenting complex data issues to non-technical audiences Educated to degree level or equivalent experience. Relevant Excellence in Technical and Global P&C modules completed in Portfolio Management Strong financial acumen including Financial Tools for Account Managers completed. Completion of ACII qualification.
