An opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer has become available with a leading OEM of heavy commercial vehicles in Coventry. The Mechanical Design Engineer will join a small but established engineering team and will be responsible for mechanical design solutions from concept through to production, using 3D and 2D CAD software.
This role requires proven commercial experience in Mechanical Design, with the ability to develop cost-effective designs for manufacture, working closely with the wider engineering and production team to deliver world-class engineering solutions.
Mechanical Design Engineer - Responsibilities
1. Develop cost-effective designs from Concept through to Production, including 3D models and 2D drawing sets to fulfil technical specifications and requirements.
2. Estimate resource and time needs for task delivery.
3. Deliver solutions in line with timing plan and budget.
4. Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality and suppliers.
5. Follow engineering processes and procedures such as Engineering Change Requests, Engineering Releases and Design Review sign-offs.
6. Create and present design review packages to allow assessment of technical quality and design record to be in place.
7. Support the identification of improvement opportunities.
8. Where necessary, investigate and resolve technical issues in a structured manner.
9. Where necessary, support Manufacturing and Purchasing with technical expertise to resolve issues, concerns or assess alternate proposals.
10. Preparing and delivering progress reports against project plans.
11. Actively participate in business unit improvement activities.
12. Support a continuous improvement culture across the Engineering team, contributing to a high-performing environment.
Skills & Experience Required
1. Proven Mechanical Design experience of developing design solutions through to production.
2. Experience of 3D CAD design to produce 3D models and 2D drawings.
3. Use of PTC Creo or similar CAD software.
4. Appropriate application of GD&T.
5. Have a 'hands-on' approach to engineering design and development.
6. Experience of Engineering design reviews, release and change control processes.
7. Worked in a relevant Product Development role with appropriate experience considering whole vehicle System Engineering, such as: Heavy Gauge Fabrication and/or Structures, Chassis Systems, Powertrain Systems, Drivers Environment.
8. Appreciation of hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems.
