Job Description: The SDA is running an internal promotion opportunity under the Senior Professional Chief of Staff (COS) success profile to recruit a COS for our CEO. This assignment presents a unique opportunity to work at the heart of the SDA and to be at the forefront of the Defence Nuclear Enterprise. This is a high-profile assignment that brings with it fantastic insight and opportunity to be part of the strategic direction setting for the SDA at an important time. At the Senior Professional grade, a Chief of Staff will play a key role in leading the strategic direction of the business, the ongoing operational delivery, and on continuous improvement and business change activities. Roles at this grade require strong leadership experience, experience in managing large and complex programmes, and the ability to engender positive behaviours that motivate and develop our people. Specifically as a COS the SDA CEO, you will have a holistic view of the organisation. You will offer strategic advice and guidance in delivering the CEO’s priorities within the SDA and beyond. You will develop close working relationships across the SDA to ensure outputs are delivered, obligations met, and the strategy is executed. You will lead the outer office team in achieving these goals and developing a high-performing environment. Please note: This is an internal promotions opportunity for SDA employees only. The nature of a COS role requires regular attendance at site for close working with the principal and immediate team. Detached duty is often a feature of COS roles. The COS to the CEO can expect to undertake regular visits to SDA, MOD and industry sites across the UK. This role requires you to have lived in the UK for the last 10 years and obtain Developed Vetting (DV) security clearance. Clearance must be obtained without any caveats that prevent you from carrying out the role you have been recruited for. Typical Main Responsibilities: The success profile outlines the wider remit of a COS at the senior professional grade showing the varied nature of assignments. Specifically as COS to the SDA CEO you will: Ensure CEO’s priorities are being met, to a high standard and to time. Ensure you are horizon scanning to increase proactive responses from the SDA to developing situations. Maintain strong senior networks across Industry, Head Office and across government. Ensure the highest standards and accuracy of written work are maintained, specifically correspondence to ministers offices. Provide a point of contact for day-to-day issues arising and be prepared to problem solve autonomously. Manage the CEO’s corporate governance commitments. Provide clarity, support and direction into the organisation, across all directorates. Demonstrate personal resilience and flexibility. Lead the outer office team. Person Specification: We are looking for you to be able to demonstrate your evidence and experience against the following essential criteria: Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to liaise and influence stakeholders at all grades across a range of organisations. A track record of building and maintaining strong relationships with a variety of stakeholders. The ability to manage a diverse portfolio of topics from long-term governance to urgent outputs. Retaining sight of the big picture throughout all activity. Significant knowledge and experience of project delivery and business operations. Leading a high-performing team. Eligibility: Existing civil servants are eligible for promotion if they: Have been recruited into SDA on a permanent or fixed basis through fair and open competition with no restrictions on their future posting. Do not have an immigration visa restriction which specifies a piece of work. Have successfully completed their probation period and are not subject to a Performance Improvement Plan. Are on loan from another government department to SDA (however SDA cannot guarantee the promotion will be honoured by another government department once the loan ends) Have scored a 1, 2 or 3 in the previous years’ performance rating. CLICK HERE TO APPLY Promotion Calculation Approach Promotion Greater of 10% increase or the minimum of the higher grade, subject to the following: If your salary is below the minimum for the new grade and pay range for the relevant success profile after the 10% increase has been applied, your salary will be increased to the minimum of the pay range. If the 10% increase takes your salary above the threshold, your salary will be restricted to the threshold. Where this is the case, the increase in salary will be no less than 5%. Wherever a consolidated rise in salary is less than 10%, the difference will be paid as a nonconsolidated single lump sum. No employee will be paid above the upper limit of the pay band, all consolidated promotion increases will be capped at this limit.
