We are seeking a permanent Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, to join the Southwark Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service.
The post holder will join an established Multidisciplinary Team and support in the leadership and delivery of effective community CAMH services, in accordance with national guidance and guidelines, and in collaboration with other members of the multi-disciplinary team, and other relevant services in the statutory, private, and voluntary sectors.
This Consultant post offers an opportunity to join Southwark CAMHS and the CAMHS Clinical Academic Group of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, the most comprehensive mental health service for children and young people in the country.
Main duties of the job
This post includes direct clinical activity and supporting professional activities, during which the post holder will contribute to service development, clinical governance and quality improvement, in addition to completing continuous professional development and pursuing other professional activities.
The main responsibilities of the post include:
1. Assessment and management of children and young people, and to provide psychiatric input for both routine and emergency clinical care in the neurodevelopmental service and in the Early Help team to carry out mental health & risk assessments on children & young people, including with regards to the use of the MHA, as appropriate, and to support the multi-disciplinary team in managing these situations effectively.
2. To assume responsibility for own case list and case management of children and families, in partnership with the MDT.
3. To use pharmacological interventions, as appropriate, in partnership with children and their families and networks of care.
4. Supervision of junior medical staff as required.

Job responsibilities
Duties of this post holder also include:
1. Participation in training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff.
2. Attending and chairing clinical meetings as timetabled.
3. To consider safeguarding issues for each case, as relevant, consulting with other professionals and referring concerns to the appropriate safeguarding teams as required.
4. To communicate skilfully, tactfully, and sensitively with children, families and other professionals, taking account any potential barrier to communication.
5. To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping and report writing, according to professional and Trust guidelines, including electronic data entry and recording.
6. To work as an autonomous professional, within professional guidelines and the policies and procedures of the Trust and service and provide advice and guidance as appropriate to members of the MDT.
7. To link with statutory and voluntary agencies and professionals as well as other CAMHS Teams, as appropriate, in support of referral pathways and joint work.
8. To maintain good relationships and clear lines of communication with other professional agencies and departments, providing specialist advice and support where appropriate.
9. To maintain a high standard of verbal and written communication and to provide continuity of care.
10. Participation in peer and group supervision meetings.
11. Adherence to agreed job plan and appraisal procedures set by the Trust.
12. Maintain GMC registration, maintain a License to Practice and participate in CPD to remain in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
13. Maintain Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval. If the appointee is not Section 12 or AC approved, they will be expected to become so as soon as possible.
14. Provision of prospective cross cover for colleagues during periods of leave and provision of advice to other CAMHS teams covered.

Person Specification
* Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
* Evidence for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within six months of gaining CCT in C&A psychiatry or Equivalent training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CESR issued by the GMC).
* Section 12 approved.
* Approved Clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
Training and Experience
* Experience in Outpatient/Community Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
* Experience of assessing and managing complex co-morbidities.
* Trained in ADI and/or ADOS.
* Training in investigation of complaints and SIs.
* Experience of providing consultation to non-CAMHS practitioners and multi-agency work.
* Special interest in neurodevelopmental conditions.
* Experience and/or additional training in forensic mental health.
* Experience of paediatric liaison and crisis care.
ACADEMIC SKILLS & LIFELONG LEARNING
* Management/Audit - Participation in audit or QI in clinical posts (A) (I).
* Teaching - Experience of teaching a range of disciplines (A).
* Research - Involvement in research projects.
* Excellent demonstrable communication skills in English (both oral and written).
* Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and resolve conflict.
* Probity.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post.

Qualifications
* MRCPsych or equivalent.
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
* Experience in other relevant specialties such as in-patient psychiatry, psychotherapy etc.
Clinical skills
* Excellent leadership skills.
* Excellent child and adolescent psychiatric assessment skills.
* Good ability to relate to children, adolescents and parents/carers.
