JOB PURPOSE
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to join our Marine Operations department as Safety Superintendent. This role collaborates with the MSC Cruises fleet for all matters related to safety on board - including verifying all vessels are constantly maintained with high safety standards, monitoring compliance of on-board equipment and procedures in line with company standards in relation to fire risk, lifesaving, and firefighting.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
• Conducts regular inspections to verify that Company Safety Standards are met, confirming full compliance with both class and statutory requirements.
• Monitors and inspects Fire Risk Procedures, safety drills, and fire risk inspections to ensure the vessel's readiness and compliance with safety protocols.
• Oversees and monitors the general maintenance of lifesaving and firefighting appliances, ensuring that they are in good working condition and compliant with safety standards.
• Ensures all safety-related documents, both ashore and onboard, are kept up to date and maintain accurate records for both internal and external audits, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Monitors daily operations aboard vessels to ensure strict adherence to company policies, maritime safety standards, and international regulations. Ensure the vessel complies with class and statutory requirements.
• Maintains consistent communication with the Ship’s Master, Staff Captain, and Safety Officer to ensure the seamless operation and safety of vessels.
• Prepares and tracks annual budgets related to ship safety parts, ensuring cost-effective allocation and adherence to budget limits.
• Attends and oversees Dry Docking activities related to safety equipment and systems, ensuring full compliance with regulations and the maintenance of safety standards throughout the dry-docking process.
• Reviews and updates maintenance schedules based on findings from ship surveys, ensuring that corrective actions are implemented in accordance with safety requirements.
• Monitors the performance of audits and inspections concerning non-conformities, ensuring that all identified issues are addressed and resolved.
• Tracks, monitors, and ensures the timely completion of outstanding points and work items identified during safety inspections, ensuring prompt resolution.
• Manages the implementation, compliance, and continuous improvement of ISO 45001 standards.
• Develops and implements amendments to policies and procedures to ensure compliance with new regulations, legislation, and recommended practices following audits, third-party inspections, and Port State Control inspections.
QUALIFICATIONS (skills, competencies, experience)
• Experience sailing Safety Officer on Cruise Ships OR Experience in working as an Inspector, Marine Surveyor, or similar, primarily within onboard Deck & Safety, within a Classification Society would be preferred.
• Chief Mate Unlimited Certificate OR Degree qualified in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a similar Naval Engineering function.
• Fluency in English, both oral and written
• In-depth understanding of the ISM Code (International Safety Management) and Structural Fire Protection standards,
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office tools such as Power-Bi, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, to manage documentation, reports, and presentations.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, fostering a cooperative and productive working environment.
• Demonstrated accuracy and strong attention to detail, ensuring safety protocols are followed to the highest standards.
