BAND 5-6 PROGRESSION POST
*12 month Fixed Term Maternity Cover*
We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Pharmacy technician who has a passion for working in the ward environment. This is a new and exciting role within our ward based team, to work closely with the Lead Pharmacist to provide a comprehensive, ward based, clinical service to the medical specialty wards at WVT. There will be opportunities for further leadership and clinical training.
The role will include carrying out medication history taking and medicines reconciliation, therapeutic drug monitoring and blood result interpretation, making therapeutic interventions within scope of practice, supply of medicines, final checking of medicines and counselling of patients and line management and supervision of junior staff.
The role will also involve making continuous improvements to the service using innovative techniques to develop the pharmacy technician and support staff and integrate fully into the multi-disciplinary team.
Band 5 to 6 Progression considered for those who do not meet the criteria. A local developmental plan will be provided to indicate what elements would need to be achieved with timescales for the Band 6. For example, band 6 provided on satisfactory completion of the following:
1. Accuracy Checking Accreditation within 12 months of commencing role
If the targets are not met then formal capability is commenced using the developmental plan.
Main duties of the job
2. To ensure that medicines reconciliation in a timely manner
3. To ensure that patients have access to all medication required during their inpatient stay by checking patients' own medicines and completing medication orders
4. To ensure medicines are made available for timely and efficient discharges
5. To counsel patients and/or their carers on their medicines to ensure adherence and compliance and reduce hospital admissions related to medicines
6. To manage the day-to-day running of the pharmacy ward based medical team
7. To work effectively as part of the team and to identify and promote best practice in the multi-disciplinary environment
8. To be a role model and mentor for all members of the team
9. To work collaboratively with other Lead Pharmacy Technicians to provide a consistent and professional approach to ward based pharmacy services
10. To manage a range of staff
11. To deliver training to all grades of staff and establish a clear pathway for Pharmacy Technicians to train and develop their knowledge and skills
12. Dispensing and final checking of medication

Education & Qualifications
Essential
13. NVQ Level 3 and or BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science
14. Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council as Pharmacy Technician
15. Evidence of continuing professional development
16. Accuracy Checking Technician qualification
Desirable
17. Level 4 Clinical Diploma for Pharmacy Technicians
18. Management Qualification at Level 3
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Essential
19. Knowledge and understanding of basic management principles including team management and motivation
20. Extensive knowledge of clinical pharmacy and wardbased working
21. IT Literate in routine Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel etc)
22. Knowledge and skills to mentor and develop staff
