Job Specific Outcomes - Lead a team performing a broad range of blood transfusion laboratory analyses on patients and donors blood samples, giving advice on appropriate techniques, to guide and contribute to clinical diagnoses, treatments and the evaluation of the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. - Manage the blood transfusion/ donation processing and testing workload, through good teamwork to ensure urgent clinical needs and agreed turnaround times are met and aligned to good manufacturing and transfusion best practice. - Responsible for ensuring the personnel directly involved in the testing storage, distribution and issue of human blood and blood components are qualified to perform those tasks and are given timely, relevant and regular training and competency assessment. - Responsible for ensuring serious adverse event relating to the testing, storage and distribution of blood and blood components or serious adverse reactions observed during or after transfusion are investigated and reported in compliance with BSQR 2005 and local procedures. Maintain the procedure for the withdrawal and disposal of unsafe blood and blood components associated with product recall. - Ensure a record of full traceability of blood and blood components is maintained from the point of blood collection (Jersey donations) or receipt of UK units into the hospital blood bank to the point of transfusion into the patient. - Oversee instrumentation and procedures, researching and investigating latest techniques, verifying techniques, ensuring the laboratory repertoire remains current and that results of investigations meet quality acceptance criteria and the principles of good laboratory practice. -Delegate effectively to specialist biomedical scientists the roles for specific areas of responsibility, such as health and safety, audit, supplier management, or introduction and verification of new scientific techniques. -Give advice on guidelines and techniques, appropriate specimens and examinations, to manage users expectations and to collaborate on new service developments, networking with other healthcare professions on and off island. - Coordinate and manage internal and external quality assurance schemes, lead on internal audit and external accreditation, giving assurance to service users that the quality of laboratory work can be relied upon. - Participate in the writing and review of quality management and operational documentation, the verification and control of procedural change, and accurate record keeping of scientific investigations to demonstrate commitment to quality and assurance. - Maintain the data needed to ensure full traceability of blood and blood components from the point of blood collection (Jersey bled units) or receipt of UK units into the hospital blood bank to the point of transfusion into the patient. - Provide HR and people management functions for the staff they line manage. - As one of the Blood Sciences Team Managers provide managerial cover in the absence of one of the other section managers or the Laboratory Manager for Blood Sciences.
