This post is for a position within the anaesthetic department as a specialty doctor. We would aim to support opportunities for career progression through subspecialty training. There will be opportunities to work across all specialties according to previous experience, including paediatrics, cardiac, neuro and major general anaesthesia, as well as in critical care. The post holder will provide a range of anaesthetic services, both elective and emergency, in and out-of-hours, with supervision by senior colleagues when required. There will be access to educational supervision and study leave support for training and career development. Further support will be given for development of non-clinical skills for career advancement.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the delivery of high-quality anaesthesia in both elective and emergency settings, with supervision as required.
The post holder will be required to comply with all Trust Policies notably in relation to job planning, appraisal and leave taking in line with Departmental and Trust objectives, e.g. flexible working and annualised job plans. They will also be expected to participate in the normal duties relating to the administration of the Department of Anaesthesia. These duties will include teaching, continuing medical education and audit. The post will be for a 10 PAs per week, rolling rota.
The Directorate of Anaesthesia, Theatres and Pain Services is committed to support the efficient development of surgical specialties. The successful applicant for this post will be expected to participate in the provision of anaesthetic services for operating lists that may start earlier than the normal start times or are planned to run on into the late evening and potentially weekend elective, emergency and trauma anaesthetic cover. This will be agreed with the Director of Anaesthetic Services. Contribution to out-of-hours service supporting the provision of services to one of the four areas covered will be expected on the basis of a 1 in 8 residential on call rota. The on-call work will be in an area appropriate to each individual’s capabilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will provide a range of anaesthetic services, with supervision by senior colleagues when required. Consultant sessions for training and career advancement will be available on a flexible basis.
The post holder will interact with members of the surgical teams and theatre staff, and also with ward staff associated with the care of patients. He/she will also be a member of the directorate interacting with colleagues and trainees.
The post holder will be managerially responsible to the Service Line Lead for Anaesthesia, and professionally responsible to the Medical Director. The employer is Plymouth University Hospitals NHS Trust.
The job plan is based on a full-time appointment or whole-time equivalent pro-rata to fulfil the Junior Doctors Contract. The post will involve participation in the on-call rotas with an average of 10 PAs a week with a maximum on call frequency of 3 in 7.

* Full GMC registration with licence to practice
