About The Role
Since its inception in 2019, the PGCE programmes at Swansea University have gone from strength to strength. In the last year, the secondary programme has been through an Estyn inspection and been reaccredited by the Education Workforce Council. Both have complimented us on the strength of our programmes in general, with particular recognition for our work on wellbeing and on linking research and practice. Building on the success of our Secondary PGCE, we are introducing a new History pathway in September 2025. We will be making a 0.5 FTE appointment to lead this pathway. This can be at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level.
This post is being advertised at the same time as an equivalent position for leading our new Secondary PGCE in Geography. For the right candidate, we would consider combining these roles, i.e. as 1.0 FTE in Humanities. Please indicate if this is your preference in your letter of application.
The appointee will become a member of the Department of Education and Childhood Studies. This is a vibrant and collegial department with a commitment to undertaking and disseminating meaningful research. We work in partnership with many other universities in Wales and beyond, and with other parts of the sector. We pride ourselves on the quality of our research environment for all staff, which was complimented by the ESTYN inspection team.
The successful applicant will lead the History Pathway of the Secondary PGCE. They will also make contributions to other programmes in the department including the MA Education (Wales) and potentially to other undergraduate or Masters programmes.
Whilst we welcome applications from anyone with suitable experience and expertise, we would especially welcome applications able to teach and assess in the medium of Welsh.
Welsh Language Skills
The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon), and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please, etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1-hour course.
